Recognizing Birmingham-Southern's historical commitments to eco-stewardship across our campus, we, the student body, find it completely unacceptable and offensive that the college currently promotes the false narrative that our campus community participates in recycling programs. It is misleading and unethical to use recycling receptacles for standard waste, particularly when students and faculty are uninformed about the nature of this current waste management system.
We, the students, faculty, and alumni of Birmingham-Southern College, demand and expect nothing short of a college implemented and run recycling program.
I am disturbed to hear student reports of housekeeping combining recyclables with regular trash. I think we need to start the academic year with instructions on recycling on campus, a discussion of where recyclables actually go, and work on a protocol that will inform, encourage, and allow the underpaid housekeeping staff to easily follow recycling guidelines.
