The current Reach for the Stars reading incentive program at Hilo Intermediate School challenges kids to read approximately 6 extracurricular books per quarter. Kids who meet the goal go to "Incentive Day" where there is a party for them. Those that don't, go to Study Hall to wait it out. The RFTS Committee does not view this as a problem. Keep in mind that the reading program is completely voluntary for the kids. So, essentially, kids who don't want to or can't meet the goals are being punished for not choosing to read for fun. Please sign the petition if you thnk this practice is unacceptable.

Watching my own child dread coming home because of this program is exactly why I started this. I am hearing from so many other families who feel the same frustration about these unfair study halls. We are currently preparing a formal letter to the school board to demand a change in policy.

Seeing this kind of momentum confirms that I am not the only one feeling the sting of these unfair policies for our students. My heart is full knowing so many of you understand why we need to change how Hilo Intermediate treats these children.

totally agree. reading should be fun not a way to alienate kids who have other things going on.

my son was so upset when he had to sit in study hall while his friends went to the party. it ruins the whole point of reading if they dread the program.

RIDICULOUS. school should be encouraging not making kids feel like failures for missing a book goal.

this is wrong. you dont punish kids for not doing something voluntary. study hall is basically a timeout.
