What's better having a project for school over the summer or having a free summer? Honors students in this county are having to read and write over the summer due to the belief that students will loose the progress they've made during the year. Many students drop out of the honor program because they have nine to ten weeks to read multiple books and do multiple projects. It is unfair that honor students have to deal with this academic pressure. According to a study done by Ebbinghaus on human memory, you only remember 35% of what we learned, so therefore it is pointless to have these assignments. Help give those students summers back and sign this.

I'm a student at SEHS and I dropped out of honors English because of reading over the summer. I have a job and I just don't have time to read and work during summer break.
I honestly love reading but school takes the fun out of it when they force us to dissect the book and write essays on them. Sure it helps us learn some things but honestly when am I ever going to have to know why an author wrote something a certain way and whether it means more than what is literally written there?
I feel like having free summers makes our lives stress free without having the beating task to include school work. I can have the ability to spend more time with family instead of setting time aside to do summer projects.
While I understand the teachers think that this helps us, it literally only adds an extra measure of the already added stress of school. The fact that honor students get rewarded with more work and more stress because they do well on their tests is an insult to education and actually discourages working harder to get into the better classes. Right niw, the better classes are the regular ones, because they teach all the same things with 5 less projects a quarter. The goal in school should be to encourage education and taking harder classes, which dont have to be harder just because theres more work, actually teach more and give harder tests and people will stop being held back from most colleges just because they didnt take an honors class. It's sad, all the schoolboard worries about is test scores and this hurts students so much more than they realize.

Yea I kinda like school, but summer is a time to refresh and relax before the new year. I also play golf everyday because I would like to get a scholarship for it. I don't have any time after spending all day at the golf course. These projects just add stress for me.
