The Selectmen finally did their jobs and re-appointed Tony Feeherry to the board. This delay was a pathetic attempt to stall progress but they had no choice once we kept the pressure locked on them. Watch them closely because we will not let them play these cowardly games with our …

Started by Citizens of Wenham 11 years ago

For thirty years Tony Feeherry has served with distinction on the Wenham Zoning Board of Appeals. It would be hard to find another person of his judgment, intelligence, and commitment to fairness leading any town board in the Commonwealth – let alone doing so for three decades. His record of public service is beyond reproach.

Several months ago Mr. Feeherry indicated his willingness to be re-appointed to another term on the ZBA when his term expired on June 30. Yet, inexplicably, the Wenham Board of Selectmen has failed to act on his re-appointment.

As citizens of Wenham, we are urging the Selectmen to re-appoint Mr. Feeherry to the ZBA immediately – at their next scheduled meeting on August 4th if not before under a duly-noticed meeting.

The Selectmen’s decision to delay Mr. Feeherry’s re-appointment already has done damage, preventing the ZBA last week from completing its pending proceedings on the high-profile Recovery Centers of America (RCA) proposal at Penguin Hall. Because of how Massachusetts law works with regard to zoning appeals in progress, the failure to re-appoint Mr. Feeherry means the ZBA will remain powerless to finish its hearing. In short, the Selectmen’s inaction has tied the hands of the ZBA from simply discharging its legal responsibilities on RCA and other matters.

This is wrong and must be corrected immediately. The Selectmen should immediately re-appoint this incredibly well-qualified public servant who has given so much to the Town. There is no excuse for the Selectmen doing anything else.

We don’t know the Selectmen’s motivations – is it petty politics at play, or a desire to throw RCA a lifeline? Again, we do not know. But the Selectmen can clear this up by doing the right thing and re-appointing Mr. Feeherry without further delay. If they fail to do so, they will leave citizens to draw their own negative inferences about the Selectmen’s motivations.

Mr. Feeherry has not asked us to create this petition, nor even knows it’s being sent. As his fellow citizens, we are standing up to urge the Selectmen in the strongest terms that they do the right thing. He of all people doesn’t deserve this shabby treatment. He deserves re-appointment.

The Board of Selectmen is still hiding behind this pathetic silence while Wenham business grinds to a halt. They think they can wait us out but their refusal to do their jobs is only proving why Tony Feeherry is needed now more than ever. We are not letting them sweep this obstructionism under the rug.

The momentum behind this push is undeniable and it proves that the residents of this town are fed up with the games being played by the Board of Selectmen. They thought they could ignore Tony Feeherry and hope we would stay silent but this groundswell shows they are dead wrong. We are keeping the pressure on until they stop stalling and do their jobs.

Tony has been a dedicated servant to the Town of Wenham for many years. I personally have appeared before him when he was a member of the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. He is very knowledgeable and fair, and always puts the interests of the town first. It would be a disservice to the citizens of Wenham for the town not to reappoint Tony given his experience, knowledge and dedication. Given this inaction, I can only question the motives behind it. I hope that the citizens of Wenham will remember that this inaction is coming from the people that WE elected to run our town come the next election.

I have been incredibly impressed by Mr. Feehery's commitment and participation in ZBA meetings. He is a consummate professional and we would be foolish to not reappoint him.

There appears to only be one reason why Tony Has not been reinstated as the head of our ZBA after such an impressive record of public service and domain expertise in our town. His no vote opposing RCAs development of Penguin Hall. How an out of state developer, who stands to make millions in a one shot deal, can impact a procedural re-appointment done many times by the. Lard of Selectmen in the past in our town, we would all like to know!

In the meetings I have attended Mr. Feeherry has certainly conducted organized proceedings -- pronouncing fair judgements and informed opinions. Please re-appoint him.

As another member of the ZBA, I can confirm Mr. Feeherry's dedication, unmatched subject matter knowledge and leadership skills. The ZBA (and, by extension, the town) would greatly benefit from his reappointment for another three year term.
