We, the citizens of Hopkinton, urge the Hopkinton Select Board to return Sergeant Timothy Brennan to active duty immediately. Sgt. Brennan has served the town of Hopkinton for 24 years, and in that time has conducted himself with bravery, professionalism and courtesy.

While it is unfortunate that Sgt. Brennan was caught up in the actions of former Deputy Chief Porter, we feel that the seven months of administrative leave Sgt. Brennan has endured is sufficient punishment. Sgt. Brennan has publicly admitted to his violation of departmental policies and has expressed regret.

We also recognize that if the Select Board chooses to terminate Sgt. Brennan, not only will that action be without precedent in Hopkinton, it could have significant financial consequences for Sgt. Brennan personally by putting his hard-earned pension at risk, and also for the Town, by exposing us to a potential wrongful termination lawsuit.

Much of our police force is young and inexperienced. The Select Board must return Sgt. Tim Brennan to his position, to provide stable leadership and mentorship to our younger officers, and to continue to ensure Hopkinton's public safety.

The volume of support has reached a level that necessitates an immediate formal briefing with the Select Board. I am finalizing the primary document to be delivered to their office later this week to ensure they review our position before the upcoming public hearing.

In my opinion: Sgt Brennan made a conscientious decision, based on a flawed policy crafted by a suspected rapist, his superior. In this case he didn't choose to return the victim back to the abuser for judgement. You tell me? In the moral scoreboard: Sgt Brennan -1 / Town -0.

I’ve know sgt Brennan for 13 years. He is a good man and Hopkinton PD is lucky to have someone like him serving the people of Hopkinton. He did the right thing letting the witness take her time to decide to come forward and developing the case. Without his efforts this case could be thrown out or never even heard.

Tim did the right thing to get this girl justice by avoiding the perpetrator and going to the next level. Chain of command is important, but, justice is more important. Protect and defend people, that’s the oath.

Please reinstate Officer Brennan. As a taxpayer, he is the kind of responsible, dedicated, and caring police officer we want in our town. He was in a no win situation and chose to protect the privacy and wishes of the victim. He’s more than paid the price for what most consider to be a technicality in the code.

Tim is an honest man and this was a very difficult situation. Being out of work for this long is punishment enough for a policy violation. Reinstate Tim. It is the best solution for the Town.

From his dedication to Hopkinton little league to running self defense classes, Officer Brennan truly cares about the people in our community. You don't see this kind of genuine selflessness from many people. Bring him back on the force - our town needs him.
