The city council officially approved the Leary and Market route for the Burke-Gilman missing link this morning. We are now shifting our focus to monitoring the engineering phase to ensure the final design reflects the cost-saving measures we proposed.

The Burke-Gilman trail is a Seattle jewel that attracts walkers, joggers, and cyclists year-round. It’s time to finally complete the trail through Ballard.
Current plans call for completing the Burke-Gilman ‘missing link’ in Ballard through a dangerous area with heavy industrial traffic in Shilshole, a plan that’s expensive, unsafe, and would remove up to 340 parking spots from local merchants while potentially costing dozens of maritime and other jobs.
OUR PLAN calls for completing the missing link at Leary Way and Market, a thriving, vibrant part of town with dozens of local shops and restaurants to explore. This area is well-traveled and well-lit. It’s safer and provides a recreation destination in Ballard for visitors and residents alike.
Our Plan costs at least $15 million less for much more:
· More Safety.
· More Recreational Opportunity.
· More Job Security.
· More Value for Your Tax Dollar Investment.

I have spent the last week gathering comparative cost data between the current industrial route and the Leary Way corridor. This documentation is now being organized for a formal presentation to the city transit committee. I am also currently in contact with local business owners to finalize a joint letter regarding the economic impact of these differing trail paths.

We have seen the traffic increase, the litter increase, and the risk to pedestrians and bicyclists increase. Please no more poorly thought out plans.
It makes far more sense to locate the missing link on Leary and Market St than it does to disrupt the maritime and commercial businesses along Shilshole Ave.
My workplace is on Shilshole and the bike path would have a big negative impact on that
Ballard, with its working factories and shipbuilding yards, is one of the last bastions of real Seattle. We need to be very careful about all changes that are made here. I have no faith really in what the Seattle city planners put forward. I’ve seen them mess up many things in the last 30 years. What developer is behind us? Who will be served? Who benefits?
The delays have gone on too long, and the current proposed route has too many problems. Make this sensible change now!

At first I was skeptical but moving the trail to a less industrial, more residential street seems to make sense.
