Bishop Park is the most heavily used public park in Athens. Every year, thousands enjoy its substantial green space and multi-use facilities. Bishop Park is widely used due it being a genuine multi-use park that serves a wide cross-range of the Athens community, allowing for a broad-range of activities that include soccer, basketball, tennis, swimming, as well as important community functions that include seasonally hosting the Athens Farmer's Market and other events.
Bishop Park is the leading selection for the development of a 2005 SPLOST-funded tennis center intended to cater largely to regional tournaments. Proposed plans include paving over a large section of the open field for 100 new parking spaces, the addition of up to 11 tennis courts, displacement of the vibrant farmer’s market, the loss of a softball field, and loss of current basketball courts.
This development will deprive the Athens community of thriving multi-purpose facilities and activities in exchange for a single-use by a minority of the population, fundamentally changing the character of this valuable public gem.
By signing this petition, you are asking the leadership of Athens-Clarke County to remove Bishop Park from consideration for this development.

I AM ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY BY THE ENERGY BEHIND THIS MOVEMENT!! SEEING THIS MOMENTUM IS GENUINELY INCREDIBLE AND IT PROVES THAT OUR COMMUNITY ABSOLUTELY REFUSES TO LET BISHOP PARK BE DESTROYED!!

WE NEED GREEN SPACE. Stop paving everything in Athens. Seriously where are people supposed to hang out?
This makes zero sense. Why ruin a park everyone actually uses for a fancy tennis center? Bad idea.
Leave the farmers market alone! Its the best thing about the weekend around here. Dont destroy our community space.
Keep the park how it is. My kids grew up playing on those fields and it would be a total shame to pave it all over for a bunch of tennis courts.
