The "pilot culls" of badgers in Somerset in 2013 have led many people to seriously question the humanity, efficiency and cost of this method of "controlling" bTB, especially as it has been condemned by so many leading and reputable scientists.

This petition calls on Taunton Deane Borough Council to assist with an alternative strategy which is already working across Wales and in many parts of England.

We, the undersigned, call on Taunton Deane Borough Council to give financial support to local badger vaccination projects being undertaken and to financially assist other badger vaccination projects which may be set up in the future.

The feedback regarding alternative strategies for badger conservation remains constructive and insightful. I am currently coordinating with local wildlife experts to prepare a formal presentation for the Council. Your continued engagement proves that this community prioritizes evidence-based wildlife management.

Vaccination of both cattle and badgers is the only credible way forward. The badger culls in both West Somerset and West Gloucestershire have been ruinous to those rural communities and to any tourism they might have had.

Wildlife slaughter for no scientific reason has occurred. Vaccination should have been done initially, also investigations into animal husbandry on some farms. Cattle knee deep in mud all winter and lying in mud are going to be vulnerable to diseases

This cull is not effective enough to justify it - too much scientific uncertainty to kill thousands of protected species - at best they say 16% reduction in incidence of TB in cattle.

We expect Taunton Deane Borough Council to recognise the futility of culling badgers and the serious harm it is doing to local communities. As representatives of these communities the council can support farming and wildlife by vaccinating badgers on council owned and controlled land.

The badger cull has proved nothing but the wanton killing of our local wildlife to satisfy political ideology without scientific grounding in fact. It has been costly and destructive. It's time to do the job of protecting animals, including badgers, from bovine tb by investing in vaccination.

The cull was a total failure and a disaster for our wildlife. Please don't make the situation even worse than it already is. Vaccination is the way forward for badgers, better biosecurity is the way forward for cattle.
