Protect Our Children: Demand Action on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety in Mendham Borough

We, the undersigned residents of Mendham Borough and concerned members of the community, call on the Mendham Borough Town Council to take immediate and tangible action to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in our town—especially for our children.
Recent incidents, including a child and parent being struck in a crosswalk, have highlighted urgent safety risks at intersections such as Main Street and Hilltop Road, and throughout town. Increased traffic volume, speeding, and a lack of pedestrian-focused infrastructure put residents—particularly schoolchildren—at unacceptable risk.
We respectfully request the following actions:
- School-Based Safety Programs: Implement regular bike and pedestrian safety assemblies at Hilltop Elementary and Mountain View Middle School.
- Enhanced Traffic Enforcement: Increase police visibility, enforce speed limits, and issue citations for traffic violations in high-risk areas, particularly during peak hours.
- Proactive Summer Safety Measures: As more children are expected to be biking and walking around town in the summer months, ensure high-traffic areas like Patriots' Path, the Mudhole, and the Creamery are closely monitored and made safer.
- Transparent Action Plan: Communicate a clear, public plan of action that details what steps the Council will take—and when—to address these safety concerns.
Our community should not have to wait for another serious accident before action is taken. We stand united in demanding real, protective measures to keep Mendham’s residents—especially its youngest—safe.
