The park board officially voted to reinstall the fire pits this morning. I spent so many birthdays at those beaches with my family and I am relieved that future generations can gather there again. Thank you for pushing this across the finish line with me.

Final supporters
Generations of islanders have used the fire pits at Odlin Beach. Many of the bonds in our community have been kindled by those fires, and many existing ones have been nurtured by the food cooked on them. Odlin, until March 2021, was the only public access beach where community members could gather around the fire without having to pay an entrance fee, making it the ONLY equitable access point on our little island.
The fire pits have been removed without any community input.
Make your voice heard!

I have spent the last few days talking with neighbors who share the same stories of birthday parties and quiet evenings by the water that I do. It is clear that these pits represent more than just stone and iron to us. I am currently coordinating with a few local organizers to figure out the best way to bring these stories directly to the park board.

Seeing one hundred people put their name behind this makes me think of all the nights my family spent by those fires. It feels like this community is finally gathering again to protect the spaces that actually belong to us.

Keep the fire pits open for locals. Otherwise there will be more illegal beach fires which then could result in a bigger fire. Better to hqvecontroled area where large groups can safely gather outside.
Please replace the fire pits. When the fire risk is low and it's cool islanders are responsible and it is part of the culture! In the summer during high burn risk forbid the use. Thank you for the consideration!
Please return our community fire rings at Odlin. This has long been a gathering place for the community. Odlin has hosted decades of baseball games, Easter egg hunts, local potlucks and celebrations. It belongs to the people. Let us continue gathering and enjoying a fire there.
These fire pits are a vital community resource, linking us to a tradition humans have had for hundreds of thousands of years. Equitable access to this basic human experience is extremely important.
As someone who’s great-great grandmother traveled in a longboat on the Salish Sea, it is especially offensive to know how increasingly unwelcome local residents are made to feel in deference to those who are visiting.
As someone who frequently visits and uses the parks fire pits, this is a piss poor decision! Obviously the people who made this decision don't live on Lopez! They are taking away a community activity, without a voice of the community. It's time to hold these board members accountable for their piss poor decisions.
Bring back the fire pits - they are a staple of our community!

I have celebrated some of the most important events in my life around these circles, including the night before my wedding, my mothers wedding, her dying process and her memorial. Please keep them available for all these important gatherings!
