To the City of Pittsburgh:
We, the undersigned, call for an end to the deer cull in Pittsburgh. The cull is an inhumane and ineffective approach to managing the deer population in our city. We urge city officials to implement humane alternatives that prioritize the welfare of both the deer and our community.
Why This Matters:
- Inhumane Treatment: Culling involves the unnecessary killing of deer, causing unnecessary suffering to these sentient beings. It is our moral responsibility to seek compassionate solutions.
- Ineffective Long-Term Solution: Studies have shown that volunteer-led culling does not provide a lasting solution to deer population control. Populations often rebound due to the increased availability of resources, leading to a cycle of repeated killings.
- Safety Concerns: Culling can threaten public safety, particularly in urban and suburban areas where stray arrows could harm residents and pets.
Humane Alternatives:
We advocate for the city to adopt non-lethal and effective methods of deer population management, including:
- Fertility Control: Implementing surgical sterilization on the doe population to manage deer fertility and gradually reduce population numbers.
- Habitat Modification: Altering landscapes and planting deer-resistant vegetation to deter deer from certain areas naturally.
- Community Education: Educating residents on coexisting with deer, including proper fencing techniques and safe driving practices to prevent deer-vehicle collisions.
Call to Action:
We call on the City of Pittsburgh to:
- Halt the planned deer cull immediately and refrain from conducting any future culls.
- Convene a task force comprising wildlife experts, animal welfare advocates, and community representatives to explore and implement humane alternatives.

People are building in their home so we’re out. Are these animals supposed to go. It’s cruel to just waste what God given us.
Culling and removal does not stop population growth as evidenced by National Academy Science 2013 on population control of wild horses and burros. This is due to less competition. Birth control darting is the only effective way and it is humane and not dangerous to public as culling.
I am mortified by this barbaric and inhumane decision. I'm ashamed of our city government and very angry that murdering these beautiful gentle creatures is going on in our beautiful city parks. It is deeply disturbing. Please stop!
THIS SICKENS ME TO THE CORE. I thought Pittsburgh people were more compassionate than this. The answer is not always to KILL.
The local wildlife has just as much of a right than we do to live on this land, possibly more of a right. This is inhumane and shouldn’t be done to the deer or any animal.

The deers aren't trying to hurt anyone they're trying to find food because we keep destroying where they are to live and eat so they roam to find food. If we took care of nature they wouldn't come into the cities. Please stop killing the deers. Please
