This petition has been created by the class reps of the 2018 year group on behalf of students who expressed deep concerns about being held back with the progress of their dissertations due to the adverse weather. A majority of students have already indicated on Facebook that they feel that the adverse weather has been disrupting their ability to progress with their dissertation due to them being unable to come into the library and use Datastream. Datastream is an on-campus resource, with only two terminals in the library. While the library was open from 10am-6pm, people expressed that they came in and it wasn't working on the day they came in. The restricted opening hours and this resource being in high demand further exacerbated the problem. Other people have been unable to come in altogether due to the roads (at least around campus) not being cleared of snow or having been gritted (the car park was thus also unused), the subway closing unexpectedly early or the buses not being able to move altogether.

The students therefore feel that by being held back and with the deadline remaining in place on March 29, they have been unfairly punished since those people not requiring Datastream get more time to work on their dissertation as they did not rely on any data from Datastream in order to progress. We deem any argument claiming that people could have planned ahead in advance unreasonable as people have been working on their dissertation from the very first day and some even had clear milestones in their planning regarding when they started their data collection but such events as adverse weather are unexpected. For your information, we have also been made aware that the University of Strathclyde has given students an extension.

We also wish that those students whose progress was unaffected by the weather still be given the chance to submit their dissertation early in order to not disrupt their travel or any other arrangements they made.

NOTE: TO AVOID PEOPLE MANIPULATING RESULTS BY SINGING THIS PETITION MULTIPLE TIMES, THIS PETITION WILL ONLY ACCEPT STUDENT EMAIL ADRESSES ENDING WITH @student.gla.ac.uk. ANY OTHER EMAIL ADRESSES WILL NOT BE COUNTED.
