LLM/MSc students at The University of Edinburgh are petitioning to extend the essay deadlines from April 18th to the end of the April for two reasons:

1. To support our University staff, who deserve to have April off to focus on their own academic work (as has been customary for a number of years).

2. The quality of our work will better reflect our abilities if the deadline is extended. While we acknowledge that it is not impossible for us to write 15,000 words in three weeks, we collectively feel that to expect students to produce three Masters level essays to the absolute best of our ability in three weeks is unreasonable.

Please sign this petition with your name and student number so we can verify that all signatures are from current LLM/MSc students. However, if you do not feel comfortable signing your name, you may sign with your student number alone.

Updates

March 23, 2016

The feedback received from students highlights a widespread concern regarding the current assessment timeline. I am currently organizing the collected names to ensure our request reaches the appropriate department heads with the necessary validation. This effort remains focused on securing an extension that respects both student academic standards and staff research time.

March 23, 2016

The momentum behind this request demonstrates a collective commitment to academic excellence at our university. This level of engagement provides a strong foundation as we prepare to present our concerns to the administration.

The essay period has been unecessarily mixed up with dissertation considerations/deadlines. It does not make sense to have such a long period between the essay deadline (18/4) and the dissertation deadline (8/8).

As a non-native speaker of English, 3 weeks are too stressful for me to write 16000 words with high quality.

17000words, almost equal to two dissertations. To tell the truth I'm really stressful now, we need plenty of readings to ensure the quantity of our essays, I have nightmare every night since Monday. Really stressful now, it means more than 1000 words per day might be able to finish it on time. So please extend the deadline :( only 5 days is enough

S1433038 The more we study, the higher standards are made for us to answer the questions of essays. Even though the essay topics were distributed early, the topics this time are more difficult to discuss that we have to finish all the classes to get a clear mind. Therefore, It is still hardly to finish three essays within three weeks.

Completing to a high standard both 15 000 words of essays as well as a complete and coherent dissertation proposal, although feasible in theory, will be undermined in practice and the quality diminished in the current timeframe. Please listen to your students and professors and grant us all an extension!

As I hold down a heavy work schedule alongside university 3 weeks is feasible but not perfect for me to produce work which adequately reflects my skills.
