We, the undersigned students of the Lebanese American University (LAU), urgently call on the university administration to transition the entire Fall 2024 semester to a fully online format, including both classes and exams, in response to the ongoing political and security instability in Lebanon.

The country is currently facing extreme turmoil, with widespread explosions, and the constant threat of danger. This situation is severely impacting many LAU students, particularly those who live in highly affected areas. For numerous students, commuting to campus has become not only stressful but dangerous, putting their safety and well-being at serious risk.

Additionally, given the uncertainty of the situation, some students and their families have already made the difficult decision to leave Lebanon for safety reasons. Requiring in-person attendance forces students to choose between their education and their personal safety. This is an unfair and unjust expectation in times of crisis.

We, therefore, demand that LAU:

  1. Immediately transition all Fall 2024 courses to a fully online format, ensuring that lectures, discussions, and assignments can be accessed remotely without risk to students.
  2. Conduct all exams and assessments online to accommodate students who are unable to safely attend in-person exams and alleviate the significant stress associated with traveling in these uncertain times.
  3. Allow students the flexibility to continue their education remotely, whether they remain in Lebanon or have relocated abroad, without penalties or disadvantages.

The safety and mental well-being of LAU students must be prioritized. By transitioning to an online semester, the university will ensure that students can focus on their studies without the constant fear of danger or the need to navigate unstable conditions.

We urge LAU to act swiftly to protect its students by moving all educational activities for Fall 2024 online.

Sign this petition to support the call for a fully online Fall 2024 semester at LAU and safeguard the right of students to a safe and accessible education during these critical times.

it's safer to continue our education online or via recorded sessions so we can ensure students safety and they can access videos whenever they get the chance to learn (problems they might face: Internet problems, dislocation...).

Perilous situation to commute to university. Everyday we think twice of the dilemma between surviving and passing our courses.

we might never know whats gonna happen because unpredictable attacks are being targeted as us and I can say that it arrived to the level that even inside of class we can easily lose focus

My parents are in another country and Im the eldest sibling, going to uni, while having to juggle the responsibilities of being “the man of the house” on top of studying and living a healthy life is borderline impossible

I completely agree with converting the full semester to an online format given the current circumstances, including the political situation. It's much safer for us, especially those of us coming from distant areas where it's not safe or practical to spend time commuting to campus, uncertain of what could happen on the roads.

Given the current situation in Lebanon and the ongoing challenges posed by the war, many of us are finding it increasingly difficult to remain at university while being far away from our families. The uncertainty and stress of being away during such tumultuous times have made it clear that studying online would be a more viable option for us.
