The city finally confirmed the funding for the crosswalks at Orange and Stanley. I walked past the intersection this morning and realized that soon no one will have to fear for their safety just to cross the street. Thank you for staying with me through this fight.

The Melrose Arts District BID is currently working with the Mayor’s Office and Councilmember Koretz’s Office to have “HAWK crosswalks” (which utilize pedestrian-activated signal lights to stop vehicular traffic and allow pedestrians to cross safely) installed at N. Orange Drive & Melrose Avenue and N. Stanley Avenue & Melrose Avenue, near Starbucks.
Technical approval from traffic engineering has been received but the projects are currently unfunded and competing for funding with a long list of other projects. We understand that adjacent neighbors share the BID’s concern to slow traffic and make Melrose safer, so we are requesting your support in urging the city to make these projects an immediate priority and fund them in 2020 or as soon thereafter as possible.
Reasons to support crosswalk installation in the coming year include the following:
- Allows safe access to both sides of the extremely busy Melrose Avenue;
- Promotes the return of businesses from the COVID-19 shut down and civil unrest by making it easier for visitors to traverse Melrose, thereby stimulating commerce;
- Encourages neighborhood connections to the adjacent commercial uses;
- Enhances pedestrian safety thereby contributing to the Mayor’s “Vision Zero” Program goal to end all traffic deaths.

Seeing this kind of momentum behind our push for safer streets is truly humbling. My neighbors and I have worried about crossing these intersections for too long and now it feels like the city finally has to listen to us.

As a business owner on the block of Stanley and Melrose we would love to see this happen... pedestrians cross at this intersection all day long without one being there so for safety alone it makes sense to put one in.
I work at the corner of Melrose and Orange feel that for the safety of residents and employees in the neighborhood we need this crosswalk. I have been witness to people j walking, motor accidents as well as speeding cars on this block. The crosswalk would not only offer pedestrians a safe way to cross the street, it would discourage motorists from driving so fast on this block.
I work in the neighborhood and see numerous accidents on the corner of Melrose and Orange due to a lack of safety in crossing. These crosswalks would increase the walk ability of the neighborhood and promote public safety in crossing- it is very needed!
I own Wasteland. Melrose desperately needs more crosswalks to serve the general public and the retailers.
There are 13 children on the one block north of Melrose on Stanley Avenue. This is much needed. Additionally, There is a lot of pedestrian traffic due to the Starbucks and the Urban Outfitter.
Needed. 100%.
Due to Corona and the riots we need to do whatever we can to bring back people and foot traffic to Melrose Ave. If we don't, I fear Melrose is on the way to a ghost town.

I have worked on Melrose and Stanley for 20 years and have seen many accidents and near misses of hitting pedestrians. This is very needed for the safety of our neighborhood.
As a business owner on the block of Stanley and Melrose we would love to see this happen... pedestrians cross at this intersection all day long without one being there so for safety alone it makes sense to put one in.
