REQUEST FOR A SAFE PEDESTRIAN CROSSING

We, the undersigned residents, homeowners, and members of the community, and business leaders respectfully request that the North Carolina Department of Traffic evaluate and install a clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk near the vicinity of I75 and Brevard Street located in Waxhaw, NC.

This area experiences regular pedestrian traffic, including residents, children, families, walkers, runners, and others traveling between residentials areas and from residential to commercial in an unsafe manner . establishments At present, pedestrians do not have a clearly designated and safe location to cross the roadway in that area.

A properly marked crosswalk would provide pedestrians with a designated crossing point and increase driver awareness of pedestrian activity in the area. Depending upon the results of a traffic and pedestrian safety evaluation, we also respectfully request consideration of appropriate additional safety measures, such as:

• High-visibility crosswalk markings
• Pedestrian crossing signs
• Flashing pedestrian warning lights, if warranted
• Adequate lighting
• Appropriate traffic-calming measures
• Other improvements recommended by the applicable transportation or traffic-safety authority

We understand that the appropriate government agency may need to conduct a traffic, visibility, pedestrian, and engineering evaluation before determining the proper location and type of crossing.

Our goal is not to inconvenience motorists, but to provide a safer and clearly identified crossing location for pedestrians while improving awareness for everyone using the roadway.

We respectfully ask   the North Carolina Department of Traffic to review this request, conduct the necessary evaluation, and take appropriate action to improve pedestrian safety at this location.
