We, the undersigned voters of the Anchorage Independent School District, respectfully petition the Anchorage Public School Board to approve a Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) plan for the current school year.
While we fully support and value the Board’s commitment to prioritizing in-person learning as the preferred and best practice, the absence of an NTI option, for implementation during narrowly defined emergency-only scenarios, leaves the district unprepared for circumstances beyond its control.
With significant winter storms forecasted for the coming week and the continued possibility of extreme weather events throughout the season, it is both prudent and responsible to implement an instructional alternative, successfully used by neighboring districts, immediately.
Without an NTI framework, instructional days lost to weather will require extending the school year into June, a period when student attendance, engagement, and academic effectiveness historically decline. Implementing an NTI plan would allow the district to maintain instructional continuity, minimize disruption for staff and families, and uphold its commitment to student learning while still reserving in-person instruction as the primary model whenever conditions safely allow.

Makes zero sense to not have a backup plan. Other districts do it without any problems. Just give the kids the assignments and lets get it over with.
What would be the reason for not having this as an alternative? Even pre Covid we had this in place at Holy Trinity. Younger children got a snow day packet at the beginning of the year and older children were sent home with Chromebooks when winter weather threatened which is nearly always predictable.
Very disappointed that we lack the option for NTI days and apparently also had no snow days built into the calendar. We need to remedy this situation ASAP before our kids are in school through Mid June. At that point, there will be dismal attendance because Anchorage parents are not going to miss expensive pre-planned vacations for lack of proper planning for snow days .
Maybe if we did take extra time to start school this wouldn’t be a big issue. Not having a contingency plan in place shows that the current board isn’t planning for unforeseen events. Covid is unforeseen, we know snow days are a potential event.
One of my children is attending a JCPS high school and has experienced NTI days this school year. It has been independent assignments posted on Google Classroom for him to complete. It has worked well.
all JCPS schools have an NTI. APS should also.
NTI vs a June school day.... NTI would always win.

Ridiculous that we are even debating this. My kids are already dreading the idea of sitting in a hot classroom in June while their friends go to camp. Just let them do the work from home.
