Dear NCSD Board and Administration,

The purpose of this petition is to share the voice of the parents/students in your district as it pertains to the return of in person learning, with a virtual option.

On August 7th, 2020, Dr. Matthews asked the parents in the district to commit to either 100% virtual learning or a hybrid option that was promised to be "a robust learning experience". The hybrid model has not been robust, rather it has been filled with confusion, technology issues, and a lack of education. This commitment was for the first 9 weeks of school, through November 6, 2020.

After the school board meeting held virtually on October 1st, 2020, it is clear that the intention of Dr. Matthews is to extend this commitment through the end of January 2021. We, the parents of NCSD, did not agree to this.

The following are the expectations of the parents and tax payers in the Novi Community School District:

  • Offer a 100% in person learning experience effective November 9, 2020 for all NCSD schools.
  • Offer a 100% virtual option for anyone who prefers this.
  • Provide a survey to the parents of the district to determine how many students would be hybrid vs. virtual.
  • Provide a weekly plan to roll out the return to in person learning.

We respect and are grateful for the teachers in the NCSD for all they have done to educate our children during the unprecedented times. Our students NEED you and they need you in person, full time.

Please give parents the option to choose for their families. Some children will not thrive in either hybrid or virtual. They need full time f2f instruction.

The current hybrid model is not providing my kids enough instruction, specifically on days at home. When they are done with all their assigned work by 11:00 AM, something is lacking.

Our kids need to be in school, teachers are essential, not wanting to return to in person teaching due to concerns of the virus is no longer a valid excuse I see social media posts of teachers and administrators out in the public, at social gatherings and protests Those are optional events school is NOT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do right by our children and get them back on the classroom

The only argument presented at the 10/1 board meeting against getting kids back in school was being unable to meet social distancing guidelines. Per the CDC, masks should be worn (which they are), when distancing cannot be maintained, so we will be in full compliance with national guidelines in that regard. We are doing unknown damage to our kids both educationally and psychologically that will far outpace any potential risk due to COVID. If a student contracts COVID, by all means keep them out of school for 10 days, but we cannot return to school and also have onerous guidelines such as forcing an entire class to stay home if one student is positive - that will be a never-ending cycle of interrupting education.

Please let us go back full time as soon as possible because I’m so lost in every class to the point that I’m basically almost failing.

We have 4 children in elementary...they NEED to go back full-time. Our teachers are working double the amount of time to get half the result. Parents are struggling to work and keep their children on task and helping them complete assignments. No one is actually learning.

Too much screen time on virtual learning, younger kids loose interest fast. In class learning is a must.
