We, the undersigned students of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), are deeply distressed by recent tragic incidents on our campus. These events have exposed critical flaws in our academic policies, leading to excessive academic and career pressure. We strongly petition for changes to these policies to prevent further tragedies and ensure a more supportive academic environment.

Background

Recently, two of our fellow students tragically took their lives, allegedly due to, but surely contributed by the intense pressure caused by academic failures:

  1. Saumya: Failed a course by a small margin, resulting in the revocation of her Pre-Placement Offer (PPO).
  2. Bimlesh: Failed a course due to slightly insufficient attendance. This prevented him from appearing for most companies during the internship season.

In both cases, no summer term courses were offered to help clear their backlogs before the crucial internship and placement seasons, exacerbating the pressure and leaving them with few options. Additionally, clearing their backlogs during the regular semester leaves them little to no time to prepare for internships and placements.

We hope the administration will recognize the gravity of this situation and take immediate steps to address our concerns. We urge the administration to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve these issues in a timely and compassionate manner.

Seeing these names stack up reminds me of the friends I have already lost to this rigid system. We are almost at one hundred signatures so please send this link to your department groups right now to help us force a meeting with the administration.

We are approaching five hundred signatures and need to maintain this momentum before we formally approach the administration. Please keep this moving so they see exactly how many of us demand a safer path forward for our peers.

The academic pressure is overwhelming. The curriculum should be designed to encourage students to focus on gaining knowledge, rather than merely memorizing content and chasing grades.

Academics need to prioritize a single student not always person suffers in bulk. A general problem shall only not be catered for a mass, an individual has its own identity and problem, which competent authorities should cater rather than denying.

I am a fresher, I just came here nearly 1.5 months ago and 2 persons took their lives . Nowadays surroundings is too much depressing . I don't know much about the system of IIT Guwahati , but within less than 2 months I have just experienced that 75% attendance >>>>>>>> a student's life

Remove the 75% criterion or atleast ease it a bit we can study ourselves better than teachers. Also review exams pattern. Don't forget the goal of iits it was not for placements or packages,,, it was for innovation and contribution

Disgraceful conduct from the security guards and admin, i was there when we broke the door, i got to know about his mails to certain professors and how they ignored the situation and failed him in their courses.

Administration should take these cases seriously. This is not a single case anymore. If this continues, IIT Guwahati will become a symbol of neglect and systematic failure which overlooks the overall wellbeing of its students.
