Lower Mall is home to a number of business and rowing clubs who rely on parking availability in the area. Hammersmith and Fulham Council intends to increase parking restrictions to operate from 8:30-22:00 seven days a week, with the maximum stay reduced to 2 hours.
This will dramatically impact the local rowing clubs in the area. A rowing session can take anywhere between 2 hours and 5 hours to complete with many members travelling in from outside the area. It would be unfair to decrease accessibility to to the area for non-locals and would be damaging to the viability of local sports clubs. Local rowing clubs have existed since the 1800's and make a significant contribution to the local community and economy.
Furthermore there a number of pubs on Lower Mall which benefit from the large number of rowers that travel here.
There is not currently a heavy demand for parking at the weekends so it is unclear why these changes need to be made. As such, we are opposed to these changes being made.
I’m a member of Auriol Kensington Rowing Club and live in Ealing. It takes 20 minutes by car or bike but double that by public transport. Sometimes I have to deliver equipment to the club which requires a car especially for events like Hammersmith Regatta and Hammersmith Head which bring many visitors to the area. For these I need all day parking from 7:00 am to 7:00pm as a volunteer making these events happen.
