Lower Mall is home to a number of business and rowing clubs who rely on parking availability in the area. Hammersmith and Fulham Council intends to increase parking restrictions to operate from 8:30-22:00 seven days a week, with the maximum stay reduced to 2 hours.

This will dramatically impact the local rowing clubs in the area. A rowing session can take anywhere between 2 hours and 5 hours to complete with many members travelling in from outside the area. It would be unfair to decrease accessibility to to the area for non-locals and would be damaging to the viability of local sports clubs. Local rowing clubs have existed since the 1800's and make a significant contribution to the local community and economy.

Furthermore there a number of pubs on Lower Mall which benefit from the large number of rowers that travel here.

There is not currently a heavy demand for parking at the weekends so it is unclear why these changes need to be made. As such, we are opposed to these changes being made.

Updates

March 16, 2019

The growth of this petition now provides the leverage needed to request a formal meeting with the Council transport committee. I am currently drafting a letter that cites these specific concerns to ensure our opposition is part of the official public record.

I’m a member of Auriol Kensington Rowing Club and live in Ealing. It takes 20 minutes by car or bike but double that by public transport. Sometimes I have to deliver equipment to the club which requires a car especially for events like Hammersmith Regatta and Hammersmith Head which bring many visitors to the area. For these I need all day parking from 7:00 am to 7:00pm as a volunteer making these events happen.

Rower and coach at AKRC and make a 50 mile round trip from St Albans to do so. This draconian proposal will significantly limit my ability to keep doing so.

I have to be in Lower Mall one evening a week for more than 2 hours until around 11pm. I drive for the simple reason that being over 70 I feel unsafe walking home either along the river using the underpasses or having to walk under the flyover. Please let me keep safe and leave parking restrictions as at present.

I am a veteran member of Auriol Kensington Rowing Club and go afloat on the river 2-3 times a week, with others. It normally takes 2.5-3 hours per session which these proposed parking arrangements would make impossible. You would be banning senior citizens from maintaining their fitness !

Strongly object to any change to the existing parking restrictions. An AKRC member and LBH&F resident of more than 25 years who formerly lived on Lower Mall (Digby Mansions) without noticing any serious parking issues.

I can understand extending parking restrictions at times where the streets around Lower Mall are busy (weekday late evenings and Sunday afternoons during Summer), but to apply it at times when it is not busy - but when the rowing clubs are at their busiest - this is just discriminating against and taxing the sport of rowing at a time when we are trying to actively increase participation in sport.

New parking restrictions will just hinder the normal functioning of many rowing clubs, which are a key element of the local community in Hammersmith

I have been a member of Auriol Kensington Rowing Club since the 1960's and as well as rowing am involved in the organisation and administration on several local rowing events. I have never experienced any problem with parking in the area and these new restrictions will seriously limit, and in many cases will prevent, the continued ability to enjoy rowing and the organisation and running of local rowing events.
