I would like to request the Newcastle City Council and Newcastle government preserve one of Newcastle’s historic treasures, the brick Newcastle sculpture art sign created by well renowned artist, Mara Smith, by ensuring the City of Newcastle sign remains in a very visible public location where it can easily be enjoyed by Newcastle residents, neighbors and visitors.

The response to this request has been completely overwhelming and I am struck by how much this sculpture truly means to our community. This momentum belongs to you because I never imagined so many people would join me in protecting our local art.

Seeing this sign as we drove on Coal Creek Parkway was always a signal to my children that we were near home. Please, keep this in the public's view!

As a Newcastle City Councilman, I support this petition. In fact, I was a lone voice on Council speaking against moving this away from a prominent entry point to the City. It needs to end back up in such a spot. Thanks for launching this. I will speak to it during my Council Comments at the beginning of tomorrow evening (9/18/17) Council meeting.

Let me get this straight. Newcastle City Council can't take control of their spending and budgets but find it necessary to fund moving a part of history? Sounds like an unneeded and unwanted expense.

I grew up in Newcastle and thought the beautiful brick sign was a great tribute to the old brick factory and represented Old Newcastle well. It needs to be out on the main road.

I grew up in Newport Hills and spent a lot of time in Newcastle long before it was a city. The sign showing the city's heritage should remain in a visible location and not be hidden away in apartment complex. Please reconsider its placement, and let it remain in a place of prominence.

To most people, Newcastle is nothing more than a wide spot on Coal Creek Parkway or the access point to Newcastle Golf Course. Most have no idea of our rich history. Finding a highly visible location is essential to enhance knowledge of our community. Hiding it away is a waster of a Public Relations asset belonging to our community!

Moving this monument was a terrible plan! It needs to go back.

The sign is a piece of history. It shouldn’t be relegated to a back corner.
