The City of Whitehorse Bylaw Department has given notice that the Dalton Trail Trail Art Gallery has to be taken down and removed by April 30th.

This outdoor public art space is an important part of the Hillcrest Community and we would like to appeal this decision. We are petitioning to keep the Dalton Trail Trail Gallery installed in our trails and ask the City of Whitehorse to help us in making this an authorized outdoor public art space.

I am honestly overwhelmed by the momentum building around our gallery because this belongs entirely to your dedication. It is humbling to see so many people care about this space as much as I do.

This beautiful community lead art gallery brings joy and wonder and inspiration. It’s set up in a way that has minimal impact on the natural setting. We have lots of trails with just trees. Only here do we get to have the joy and fun of participating in a gallery that’s accessible to all. Policies should have the flexibility to accommodate their own intentions rather that rules for the sake of rules It’s also in keeping with the Hillcrest community plan, reflecting the wishes and direction of the residents at large.

This is a small intrusion into the natural environment and the joy that it brings to the community is more than welcome, it is needed. If some parameters need to be established to authorize this, such as minimizing damage to the forest and some constraints on how far it can extend into the greenspace, I think most could agree to that.

Please, do not remove the Dalton art trail. This public space activation is a beautiful reflection of Whitehorse’s creative community, which is the heartbeat of the city. The trail is a perfect example of placemaking done correctly, and to remove it would be a great disservice to both residents and visitors.

This trail is artwork at its best. I have taken my niece to this when she ws small and the wonder and joy that came to her face each turn of the bend brought much amazement to her face. It was pure joy for me to witness her reaction to the artwork! This trail is a hidden treasure that is not so hidden. But it makes the experience more magical and awe inspiring that this is in my own backyard, so to speak.

This is such a unique and magical place!! I feel like the cardboard ghouls and schools of fish are our neighbourhood guardians <3 and so many of the hillcrest youth have contributed their creative charms.

S.10 of the bylaw allows the City to authorize a use that is otherwise prohibited in this zone. I’d suggest undertaking consultation and issuing a permit with conditions that takes reasonable steps to accommodate the complaint’s concerns. It’s been a while since I’ve walked by the art display but like most I and struggling to understand the concern.

I visited this bush gallery last time we went to Whitehorse and found it a very pleasant experience . I hope it stays for the enjoyment of others who wander along there. There maybe 1 or 2 who complain but nowhere near the amount of people who enjoy it and revisit to look for new additions to the gallery. Truely hoping it will be there when we visit this Christmas. Thanks
