With much thought and extreme concern for our students, faculty, and staff around the county, we petition to move to Plan C- All Remote Learning for at least the first 9 weeks of the 20-21 School Year. We are one of the 10 largest counties in North Carolina, making the State Plan B- Limited Capacity incredibly difficult to implement thoroughly and safely at this time. With our state seeing record high CASE numbers and hospitalizations, the New Hanover County Teachers Alliance moves to delay face-to-face instruction in New Hanover County. This extra time will allow the entire county to better prepare our school buildings as well as implement the policies and procedures needed to truly return safely. The additional time will also allow for the increased number of vacationers and tourists to return home, which will help mitigate our county numbers and minimize the load on our local medical resources.

I want to return but I’m currently too worried about the spread of COVID. I also can’t take the county making decisions as we go. The spring was so stressful because policies would change so often. Everyone needs more time to get things together.
I work in healthcare and this virus is not going away anytime soon. At least for the first semester, due online classes, then if we see a decrease in the pandemic, start back in the classroom the first of next year.
As a teacher with a young family, Plan C would allow to do my best to teach without putting in danger. Plan C would also allow our schools to re-evaluate using data and have more time to transition to in person learning as conditions improve.
My daughter is a NHCS student and has always had respiratory issues specially in spring and fall. In person classes with Covid around can have fatal consequences. Do not support in person clases at all because it is inconsiderate for students and school staff members.
Please consider a switch to Plan C which would allow more time to prepare for an eventual transition to Plan B that includes input from teachers, parents, and students, which your current Plan B is lacking.
With all the equity work we have been doing over the past year or so Plan B has a huge equity dilemma which is, what are we doing for families that do not have childcare for their students during the two weeks their students cannot attend school? Public school is the largest childcare system in America and allows so many Americans the opportunity to work during their child's early years. There is a huge assumption that families can just figure out what to do with their children during this time. Please consider the many single-family homes our students come from, the families that both parents do not have the option to take off from work for those two weeks, the families that do not have friends or families to take care of their children during that time, the families that cannot afford to pay for childcare for those two weeks. This is not equitable. Even the employee benefit is not thought out. It states that there will only be supervision for students and that they are required to stay on task on their own. What about young elementary age students? Plan B has not taken into account these concerns and I believe unless a viable option has been created to address the needs of parents who do not have the ability to be home with their child or send their child to childcare that is age-appropriate then Plan B is not an accessible option. Let's be sure that we are implementing a plan that will be equitable for all students.

I don’t know how I can teach K face to face and online at the same time. I also have a critically ill husband. Until we can be certain we can be safe at school I cannot in good conscience go back and it breaks my heart that I may have to choose between my career or my life.
