Need For Transparent Communication Between Students and Parking Services at W&M
I want to give a voice to those people, whether they are part of the majority or minority, in the eyes of parking services. Let’s start a dialogue and try to make this an issue that parking services, faculty, and students can tackle cohesively. Everyone’s opinion matters, so let’s make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. If you feel like you have experienced any of the following, please take the time to sign this petition, which will be shared with the Parking Services at William and Mary.
As a Student or Faculty and Staff member have you ever:
- Felt like parking services was not clear about parking regulations?
- Felt like your voice/opinion was not importantin the eyes of parking services?
- Not been able to find a parking spot on campus?
- Received a parking citation or been towed due to an unclear reason or valid misunderstanding?
- -Felt uncomfortable walking back to your dorm at night because you have to walk from a parking spot across campus?
- Had trouble navigating the parking services website?
Did you know?
- Parking services is not required to send out a Listserv email when there is an event going on.
- Faculty and staff members can be permitted to park in student parking spotsif they cannot find a faculty and staff parking spot.
- Students are expected to be informed about each and every sporting and special events and the times that they occur during the school year. Such events include, but are not limited to, athletic events,Charter Day, Commencement, Colonial Relays, Convocations, Construction activities, parking lot maintenance activities, move-in, and move-out periods.
- A student commuter parking pass at UVA costs $264.
- A Resident/Graduate/Commuter-Day Student pass at William and Mary costs $375.
Representative from Parking services have suggested
- The current system is 15 years old and outdated.
- The parking website can be unclear and it is the responsibility of students and faculty/staff to take the time to complete more in depth research about regulations.
- Parking services is ‘storing’ the cars of juniors and seniors who “just want their car on campus”.
- They are considering making juniors and seniors who ‘‘do not need a car on campus” park in designated spots in the future.

Here I am paying hundreds of dollars every year for a pass, which should grant me the right to park in designated areas; however, even THOSE areas I pay for are taken away from me and reserved for events—further, I am then ticketed for parking in a spot I paid to be in! This is infuriating and unethical.
Some solution is urgently needed for parking on campus. I’ve had a good experience with the parking dept (helped me jump my car, responded to appeals eventually), but decals cost too much for there not to be a even slightly convenient space to park. We need a garage, or transportation to lots for students (golf cart services?).
I am off campus for large portions of the day, most of which is during normal class periods, for my major requirements and internship. However, because of the limited parking on campus, I am consistently missing meals in order to make it to my car and get to where I need to be and am always parking far away from my dorm. This is a major problem for me now, and I know for a fact that it is going to be worse for me during my three remaining semesters on campus due to how often I will have to be off main campus for class or work. There have been multiple days in this one semester alone that I have been concerned for my health, safety, or both. And anything to fix that would be increasingly helpful to my college experience.
Their regulations are hard to find on their website, and not very clear. I agree that it's unclear what is expected of students, and that has led to a lot of confusion and ticketing with myself and every other student I know.
Parking needs to be more chill. I tried to move back into my dorm after a break and because of Yates Lot being seized for the 4 tailgating people, I was not allowed in the lot and I had to park in the parking deck and carry multiple storage containers of stuff to Randolph.
188 dollars for a parking ticket is absolutely absurd.
Worst part of this school.
