The current parking situation at McNeese State University is absolutely unacceptable. In previous years, freshman and sophomores had designated parking lots separate from juniors and seniors. This year, however; due to the current construction of the parking garage, the administration has decided to combine designated junior/senior and freshman/sophomore parking lots into commuter parking lots. This means parking lots are now on a “first come, first serve” basis. The current construction of the parking garage has no impact on freshman/sophomore parking because the parking garage is being built on a junior/senior parking lot. Also, it was said by administration the reason for commuter parking is to make the freshman feel welcome and wanting to come back thus decreasing the freshman dropout rate. This idea is beyond reason; people go to college for an education, not for a shorter walking distance to class. If a student drops out, it is not because of the walk, it is because of the education value to the student. Parking is a privilege earned over time. Every junior and senior has earned their privilege to park in designated junior/senior parking lots closer to the buildings; current freshman and sophomores should be required to do the same. This petition is to let the administration know that students of McNeese State University are furious with the current parking situation and feel that previous parking rules should be re-instated immediately.
