Dear Members of the NARST Board,

We, the undersigned, wish to express our concern that Dr. Alberto J. Rodriguez’s request to see the breakdown of the vote for President-elect was denied. We feel that freedom of information and transparency in decision-making are fundamental to sustaining any democratic process. We are asking that the numerical results of the recent election for NARST President-Elect be released within one week of receiving this petition, and that by-laws be reviewed to address this and other issues of transparency in decision-making.

I am a former NARST member although I used to be a Strand Coordinator - inclusion, transparency, equity, and the free exchange of ideas would make NARST an organization I might want to join again.

Please support Dr. Rodriguez's request for a breakdown of the election results. Let's use this incident as an opportunity to increase NARST's transparency on decision-making and elections.

I tried to change this process a few years ago and discovered that only changes in bylaws can yield these types of votes. We moved towards making changes in the bylaws, and they were not changed because we need a majority of the membership to vote in the positive. This is disappointing and undermines the potential of this organization.

I was surprised to find out that election results (votes) could not be shared. What harm is there in that?

I believe that it is appropriate for election results to be released, if not to the entire membership, then at least to the people running for the election.

I support transparency as an enactment of social justice. Anything less is deliberately and knowingly unjust.

I am glad to see this petition again. It was around a few years ago -asking for transparency on many topics and accountability within NARST. This petition received no action- FYI. The leadership needs to be reminded that transparency on all fronts is important - not just elections. There needs to be clear information about processes, discussions (points and counterpoints), board decisions (why can't we recall board members based on how they represent the membership?) and long term goals. It's all opaque, Wizard of Oz like.

Transparency seems fair.
