The zoning meeting has been delayed yet again. But this is not a time to relax and risk wanted commercial development and destruction of historical sites in West Cobb.
Columbia Properties is asking Cobb County Rezoning in case Z-98, to rezone 23 acres in the 2700 block of Dallas Highway. The developer is asking to clear cut the land and build condo-like senior living and retail space. This case will be heard in May at the Cobb County Commission meeting.
On Jan. 26th, 2016, the Cobb County Commission approved moving ahead with an approved 2008 Parks Bond that was overwhelmingly approved by Cobb tax payers. There is to be an online method to nominate land for parks. This is a possible location.
This historic property, in June of 1864, was the last stand of General Joe Johnston before the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain (Cheatham Hill). But now, Columbia and the current owners, wish to destroy the beautiful, historic land and build what will assuredly be largely empty retail and ugly high density housing. The land owner has a right to sell his land if he chooses, but the Community CAN and Should have a say in what happens. Is this in the best interest of your community?
The County failed on it's promise to move ahead on a 2008 bond referendum for parks until this year. Now seems like the perfect time and a good place to begin acquiring green space. I urge you to join the neighbors in this area that have already voiced opposition to this development, and sign this petition to stop the said development. Save this historic ground from the bulldozer.
Make your voice heard, Cobb County. Say no to unwanted development.

We have reached one hundred signatures which provides the necessary leverage to request a formal meeting with the zoning commissioner. I am currently drafting a letter to the planning department detailing our opposition to the proposed condo project. Expect a report on their response once I receive it.

This is my childhood home. It was always a secluded and peaceful neighborhood. The rezoning if this land will take away many of the things that make this neighborhood so special. It will create a lot more traffic in a high traffic area and create a lot of noise fire the residents living there.
If the property is currently zoned R-20 - residential - rezoning it to commercial is expanding the commercial node and not having a step down next to residential. This sets a bad precedent. It's too dense a development next to two residential properties.
Stop land desecration through clear cutting and mass grading green spaces. Rejuvenate communities by repurposing abandoned shopping malls and existing impervious surfaces into functional new uses.
I have ancestors that fought at Kennesaw Mountain. I have enjoyed coming to the area and walking the battlefield area. I hope to be able to bring my grandchildren one day to the battlefield. Please do not rezone and destroy this historic area !!!
West Cobb's Civil War era property has already been harmed enough. And we have enough of these types of developments. Peak hour traffic is already bad enough on Dallas. Keep it up and the State will need to widen the road. This should not be approved.
What right do any of ya'll have to tell a property owner whether they can sell their own property?
Some "progre$$" i$ too expen$ive. Stop destroying heritage just to make a fast buck.

As a senior, I chose to live in West Cobb because it wasn't overbuilt. They are building a huge senior living place just west of Sandtown ans Dallas. And more retail? Check all the empty stores in strip mall from the square to Dallas.
