The council just confirmed they are moving forward with the full upgrades to our park. I honestly never imagined this would happen when I first started this, and it is entirely because of the community that pushed for change. Please keep an eye on the site as the work begins.

Lyde Green currently consists of approximately 1,300 households with a large percentage of families who are eager to have a safe park with adequate facilities to stimulate and entertain their children.

We are asking for investment from South Gloucestershire Council for the reassessment and reconstruction of the LEAP (Local Equipped Area for Play) off Howsmoor Lane, Lyde Green.

We call on South Gloucestershire Council and Green Square to carry out the following:

  1. Invest in new, safer surfacing, such as surfacing mats made of safety tested rubber. This will also allow access for people in wheelchairs who might also like to use the park.
  2. Invest in fencing around the play area and providing appropriate gates where needed.
  3. Reassess the appropriateness of the ground conditions (soil and drainage) in the Park.
  4. Invest in lighting for the park to reduce anti-social behaviour and improve safety.
  5. Reassess routes to the park for access and usability, including Howsmoor Lane and the path from Lupin Close, which are often impassable due to mud and water build-up.
  6. Invest in new play equipment for children of all ages (from 2-16), and for disabled children.

We feel that these requests need to be urgently addressed so local families can safely use Lyde Green Park all year-round.

  • The playground surfaces are unsafe as they are made of grass and soil and due to the weather and wear, it can reduce its capabilities to cushion a child’s fall.
  • Most equipment is unusable, particularly during the winter months.
  • The surfacing that has been used under the play equipment is grass reinforcement matting which in combination with the British weather creates big puddles of water and mud under most of the play equipment making it inaccessible and dangerous for everyone.
  • Another safety regulation that hasn’t been followed is the lack of fencing and gated areas to contain the children within the toddler area. Fences should be constructed and erected in accordance with the appropriate part of BS 1722, with a minimum height of 1.0m recommended.

To support families to instil healthy lifestyles for their children, residents believe that this investment is vital to the community and will also reduce vehicle usage on local roads as families are currently driving to alternative facilities.

I am honestly a bit overwhelmed by the momentum this has gained lately. This movement belongs entirely to the neighbors who decided that our children deserve better spaces to play. None of this growth would be happening if it were not for your energy and persistence.

As per what everyone else has stated: - needs gates to stop children wondering out and dogs wondering in - matting around the park equipment, not grass as when it raining, it gets very muddy - more shaded areas, as when the weather is warm/hot, you’ve got nowhere to hide. - lighting could be better for darker months of the year

We have not been able to use the park recently due to the weather making it water logged and the equipment would benefit from being on rubbery surfaces to be safer and weather proof. Also there needs to be safer routes to the park instead of muddy routes and bumpy uneven rough stones on the lane entrance.

I'd use the park more if it wasnt so muddy. Generally i go over to emersons park which has propper flooring. Lyde park us unuseable in winter. The access to it from lupin ... the muddy slope is also dangerous and then a huge puddle in front of the park even has tadpoles in it! It all needs sorting!

The park isn’t currently fit for purpose as it cannot be used in many circumstances. I also question why there are no railings when there are roads, dogs and a water course nearby.

The park is in a terrible state since it is not even a year old. It cannot be used the majority of the year due to extremely poor ground work that is flooded or extremely muddy. Can only use it sometimes after it has been dry for a long period of time.

I strongly agree that safe surfacing and disabled equipment is needed. I would also like to see sensory equipment or sensory garden within the play space as this is so important for any child's development

I agree the park is not suitable for use as it stands took my visiting friends kids the other week and it was so wet we had to come home they were so disappointed as they couldn't play in the new park

It's the details that are lacking. Better matting is needed under the equipment to stop it being so muddy. The swings are too difficult to push, there's too much friction. The roundabout doesn't spin well anymore either. The seesaw has been unusable all year due to drainage issues. I have to leave the park if I need to feed my baby as there is nowhere fenced in and safe for my toddler to play while I'm busy. And the numbers on the wheels on the small climbing frame are upside down! They just need to be swapped over! The list goes on.
