The netting on Balham Bridge has been allowed to fall into disrepair and means pigeon mess is becoming a problem on the pavements below. Fixing the netting is a small thing, but would make walking under the bridge more pleasant and safer.

In addition, unsightly graffiti has increased on the railway and land belonging to Network Rail giving a negative impression of Balham. This needs to be removed.

We urge Network Rail:

1. To mend the netting under Balham Railway Bridge to prevent pigeons nesting and to stop the pigeon mess on the pavement.

2. To remove unsightly graffiti from their railway tracks and property adjacent to Balham Station

im still getting messages from people who deal with the mess under the bridge every single day. its clear we all want the same thing so im looking into the best way to get this directly in front of network rail.

the momentum behind this is honestly wild and it shows just how many of us are sick of walking under that mess every day. its really clear now that people want the bridge fixed so we have to keep this pressure on network rail until they notice.

As a regular commuter through Balham, I find the mess under the bridge just awful - and you never know if you're going to be dumped on by a pigeon above you or not :(

There is a similar problem under the railway bridge at the Tooting Common end of Cavendish Road near the 'Triangle' playground. The road and pavement area has recently been resurfaced and improved, but that work is undermined by the pigeon mess. Many thanks.

I've also seen a piece or two fall off the bridge from underneath, it feels very unsafe and dirty.

Please sort this. It makes for a really horrible experience walking underneath. Smell is also disgusting.

This bridge will be one of my bad memories of Balham - from pushing my children's prams underneath - praying that nothing hits you as you walk as fast as you can underneath...

Network Rail is hopeless at keeping its property in good condition. Just look at the rubbish along any train track or other NR land. We shouldn't have to sign petitions to get them to do it. Clean it up Network Rail and keep your property in better condition so we can enjoy Balham.

Painting the bridge would be a great opportunity to really put the ribbon on the wonderful work Wandsworth council have achieved in tarting up Balham. Hey, there could even be a mural on the bridge? Or a cool Camden-style sign saying ‘Balham’ on it?!
