Is this even legal? Other parts of the City are receiving a benefit, but Kanata North is paying. This contravenes the Municipal Act 2001. Everyone should ask the Mayor and Councillor for a refund on the nuisance mosquito levy!

I oppose this levy because it was rushed though with limited consultation, 87% of Ward 4 households did not support it, and my property taxes are already high enough

(1) The referendum was flawed – less than 20% of the electorate voting and less than 10% of the electorate voting for the program. (2) The mosquito levy is an exception to the type of things that are normally covered by a special levy. Information obtained from the City indicates that there were 7 special levies approved for 2016. 4 of these relate to provision of fire protection and transportation for urban and rural parts of the City respectively. There are only 3 that relate to part of a ward, two of which are in Kanata North – one for the mosquito program and one to bury hydro lines along Kanata Avenue. The only other one is for an ice rink in the community of Canterbury which dates back to 2007. (3) The mosquito levy is nothing but a boutique tax designed to benefit a small enclave in Kanata North. Mosquitos know no boundaries and if there is a problem in one area it will no doubt exist elsewhere. This should be part of a City-wide pesticide control program, with the cost being spread among all taxpayers. Otherwise, are we to see a proliferation of separate mosquito levies in other wetland areas of the City? (4) How many more boutique taxes will our Councillor dream up to impose on the residents of Kanata North, based on the wishes of less than 10% of the electorate? Seems like taxation without representation, maybe time for a new representative.

I'm so not in favor of this levy for mosquito control. I think this should be paid by City of Ottawa.

I am unhappy with the special levies on my land tax bill. When was there a referendum on the various levies that now appear on my bill? The mosquito levy is the most recent example. This particular levy is for the benefit of a few small pockets of houses in the ward but all the residents of the ward are paying. As well the mosquito spraying is offering benefits to 5 wards when only Ward 4 is paying the cost. The mosquito referendum was done in a manner to encourage and manipulate the outcome to achieve what the city wanted and not to inform citizens, engage debate, and then offer an informed preference through a vote. There are many things wrong with the mosquito levy, and it should be cancelled. As well all levies should only be implemented after a fairly administered referendum produces an honest vote of approval.

No need for this kind of nonsense!
