We, the residents of the Breslau community would like to call the attention of Waterloo Region Public Health and city management to the increasingly urgent and disturbing issue of mosquitos in our neighborhood.
Mosquitoes have been harassing the residents of this area, day and night, in the summer ever since this community was built, and have, over the years, rendered outdoor activities extremely difficult. Mosquitoes are everywhere, on the driveway, on the patio, in the backyard, and even at while walking on the side walk.
We'd like to emphasize that we are not just talking about evenings. We experience massive numbers of mosquito bites throughout the day, from morning to night. Some families have to go camping to enjoy an outdoor experience with less harassment from mosquitos. We believe this unusually large number of mosquitoes poses a serious threat to the health of residents and exposes families, especially children, to increased risk of West Nile virus and other diseases.
We hereby petition to the city for assistance in this important and urgent matter of public health and welfare. To get mosquitoes under control for this coming summer, your prompt action is much appreciated.

The volume of support for this petition has prompted a response from the municipal office. I am currently coordinating a meeting with city officials to present our documentation regarding the public health risks associated with local mosquito populations.

Yup, we need some attention paid to this. My guess is Breslau pays a good portion of Woolwich's taxes. Looks like there will lots of new houses going in with all the development charges... This is our number 1 problem in this community. Woolwich is pretty responsive so hopefully they pay as much attention to this to the Chemtura issues in Elmira
BTI comes in pucks called Mosquito Dunks. You can purchase 20 for 40$. We live in the Horseshoe Cr. Area of Breslau and doses our stream and ponds once in the spring this year (after checking with environment Canada to make sure it was legal) and have seen a 90% reduction from a single dose using less pucks than we should have. It's possible other factors contributed to this year's reduction but when I'm in old Breslau the mosquitos seem as bad as ever. If the township won't help I'd be happy to pony up to a community mosquito fund each year and even apply the BTI myself. Only takes 10 mins
Thank you for doing this John. I have had to get antibiotics twice for the bites as I have a sensitivity to them and get infection . I can't even do gardening in the daytime without spraying myself with Off. Mosquitos carry all kinds of diseases and should be kept under control.
The mosquitos are so bad that I limit my activities outside, which impacts my interactions with my children. I react to the bites severely and now have scars on my body. Should my family had know how bad they were in Breslau, we would have continued to look for a home elsewhere.
Over the 8 years I have lived here the mosquito infestation has gotten exponentially worse. Something needs to be done.
I was considering purchasing an Empire or Thomasfield home but after spending a few evenings visiting my friends in the neighborhood the mosquitoes are way too annoying.
I don't live in breslau but I have family there and it's such a pain with all the mosquitos, can't enjoy the outdoors!

We Love living in Hopewell Heights! It is a wonderful community and has the , that we really cannot enjoy much of the outdoors during mosquito season. Whether we are in the backyard which is full of trees or sitting on the front porch, they are a constant nuisance! Please help us to enjoy our outdoors!!
