Denver Public Schools administration is developing plans to turn Smedley Elementary School (4250 Shoshone) into a high school. The DPS administration has not provided any information, or sought any reaction, from Sunnyside residents or from its registered neighborhood association, Sunnyside United Neighbors, Inc. (SUNI).

We, the undersigned Sunnyside parents and community members, oppose the reuse of Smedley Elementary as a high school (public or charter).

We, the undersigned Sunnyside parents and community members, support the reopening of Smedley Elementary School as a neighborhood elementary school serving Sunnyside and its surrounding neighborhoods.

I have been walking past our hallways lately and thinking about how empty they feel without the children who belong there. The lack of communication from the district continues to frustrate us all but it also strengthens my resolve to ensure our neighborhood school is returned to the neighborhood families.

Seeing this kind of movement in our neighborhood reminds me why I fought to keep Smedley open for my own kids in the first place. This surge of support proves that our community refuses to let the district move forward without hearing from the families who call Sunnyside home.

I don't have school age children but I think we need an elementary school in the neighborhood ... for the neighborhood children to keep young families in the neighborhood.

We choiced into 4 schools last year, and did not get in to any. Unfortunately, we will have to leave this wonderful neighborhood unless we have a good option for our ece-4.

Keep Smedley an Elementary, open it as our community school..... OR open the discussion for public comment. Private decisions do nothing for our community.

The neighborhood is changing with many young families who really don't have many options for good schools in the area. We need another elementary school! Go to any event around the area, and you will be able to see why this is important.

Smedley is not a compatible location for a high school. The building is designed for young children, there is no parking, and there are no labs or athletic fields. We need a good elementary school, not a high school whose students don't live in our area.

Please reopen Smedley as a neighborhood elementary. We would love to see Trevista ECE-5 moved back into Smedley out of Horace Mann to have the children back in a proper elementary building. Smedley is much more centrally located to the district than Horace Mann allowing more students to walk.

I do not want to see Smedley used as a High School. As this school was not built to handle that kind of traffic. During the year when North students temporarily used Smedley there were several consequences such as increased car traffic, graffiti, loitering in the park, and trash. This building should be used as an elementary school as that is what the infrastructure is able to handle.
