The Butler Area School Board is considering closing and consolidating six to seven of our local neighborhood elementary schools, and moving grades 4-6 or grades 5-6 to the current Butler Junior High School in numbers of 1000-1500 students.
We believe this will negatively impact our children, our families, and our community. Extensive educational research shows that small neighborhood schools are safer and offer more beneficial learning environments for children in their elementary years.
We are asking the Butler Area School District Board of Directors to consider a cost-effective alternative that would preserve the traditional K-6 grade configuration, albeit in fewer neighborhood schools. This alternative would involve closing the Junior High School, closing up to three neighborhood elementary schools, but retaining the current K-6 grade configuration in those elementary schools remaining open.

Butler is a large school district in terms of geography. Whatever small gains in cost structure are offset by a decrease in quality, long bus rides for small children and a number of empty buildings blighting small communities.
my concern is I was overwhelmed in the junior high in 7th grade imagine a fourth or fifth. And if you close inner city schools what do you expect parents who walk and do not have cars do when their child gets sick at one of the outer city schools?
My cousins son is going into 3rd grade so will move from summit 2nd grade this year to Mcquistion 3rd grade then to the junior high for 4th grade......what a disruptive situation!!
As a retired teacher in the BASD, I believe the safety and well being along with a diversified educational system, are the most critical components of a school system.
I think this is a wonderful proposal! We shouldn't have to remodel or do any major changes to any of the schools, like we would of had to do if we kept the junior high school in the mix. Plus the JHS would be more marketable to sell than all the other elementary schools.

As a former student and Parent of Butler Area school district, I have concerns over the proposal. I understand the reasons for the changes but they need to take whats best for the kids into account I feel this proposal is a good alternitve to their plan!

Subjecting small children to long bus rides cuts into family time and education time. Small children are better connected to the community and the school if the two are close to home. We don't need more disconnection between children and their community.
