Denver Public School Board : Keep Smedley ELEMENTARY

Neighborhood school are important. We have enough charters.

I do not want to see Smedley used as a High School. As this school was not built to handle that kind of traffic. During the year when North students temporarily used Smedley there were several consequences such as increased car traffic, graffiti, loitering in the park, and trash. This building should be used as an elementary school as that is what the infrastructure is able to handle.

The Sunnyside Education Committee has been working for over 3 years on our campaign of “Keep Smedley Elementary” and to re-open the school as a neighborhood elementary school to serve the needs of our community. Contrary to DPS assertions, there IS great need in our community for an elementary school. We ask that DPS BOE Members postpone any decision on the future use of Smedley until an authentic process of community involvement can be planned and executed. And absolutely NO to a HS in Smedley. We desperately need this beautiful bldg to serve the entire neighborhood. A Montessori HS will only serve a very small fraction of the community. This injustice shall not stand.

It's unconscionable that DPS is not involving the Sunnyside community in a decision on how to use Smedley. Its location in the middle of neighborhood and small scale make keeping (or re-opening) it as an elementary school an obvious choice. There's no parking, the bathrooms are made for younger children, etc. And the neighborhood is chock full of customers.

Please involve SUNI and the rest of the Sunnyside community in your decision making process.

I repeat M.L. Buckley's comment. No action until the community gets a fair voice.

It would be great for our community if Smedley was an elementary school.

If indeed the Board failed to solicit community input in this decision, that should be remedied before further action is taken.

We don't have children but believe the views of our neighbors with children should certainly be heard and considered before such a drastic change is made.

We need to talk about expanding high quality elementary options in our neighborhood.

I have friends who are at Trevista and I don't feel it is a nurturing environment for the little ones.

Moving a charter high school into Smedley is not accommodating the demands of the demographic of this neighborhood. The idea of an elementary - or a just ECE program - makes more sense.

I would like to see Smedley reopen as an Elementary school.

As the neighborhood grows an elementary school in our neighborhood is truly needed

I don't have school age children but I think we need an elementary school in the neighborhood ... for the neighborhood children to keep young families in the neighborhood.

Smedley should be reopened as an elementary school for the growing Sunnyside neighborhood.

this neighborhood is growing and should really have a local school to support that growth

With so many young children in the neighborhood, an elementary school makes the most sense.
