Help keep our beloved handyman/doer-of-things/awesome presence in school!!

Updates

May 5, 2015

The emails I keep receiving from the administration are just more of the same vague excuses. I am exhausted by the constant bureaucratic dodging but your comments remind me why this matters so much. I refuse to let them push Kern out quietly.

The momentum behind this effort has grown into something I honestly did not think possible when I started. It is exhausting work to keep pushing against the silence but seeing this support keeps me going.

Judging by all these positive comments, Stuy truly appreciates him and his work. I don't know Mr. Kern personally, but I do know that firing someone with 20+ years of dedicated service because of some exam is plain wrong.

Class of '06. I personally would NEVER donate to stuy again if this happens. You are killing the soul of Stuyvesant with this act. Stuy is not what I once knew it to be and what I loved. If this is how the administration acts I have no cares to subject other children to such a heartless, bureaucratic system #notmystuy

Kern kept the entire school running, from top to bottom. He worked tirelessly to keep Stuy humming, and yet still managed to find time to mentor students interested in the technical aspects of theater and stage production. The school would have fallen apart years ago if it weren't for Kern. I can think of nobody more qualified for or deserving of the position.

I couldn't have imagined the school running without Kern - particularly the set construction room, where most of my best memories of Stuyvesant took place

It is in no way an overstatement to say Kern is essential to Stuy functioning properly. Aside from him being indespensible to any students involved in theater, he is the person who makes the building work. And if the building doesn't work, the school doesn't work either. DOE has demonstrated its lack of commitment to its students by not fixing this situation.

Kern is the sweetest person ever! One time I lost a tiny little frog magnet and he noticed I was upset about it. I didn't think that he would even consider looking for it, but by some miracle he found it! He also loves sharing food and entertaining stories. Stuy would not be the same without him.

He was a great influence, and an important part of the Stuyvesant experience if you spend any time doing music or theater.
