SLUH announced that there will be a change in the schedule when students return from Thanksgiving. Students will have the option to either return to school fully or go completely online. While SLUH has taken many precautions to prevent the spread of COVID 19, a full return will mean social distancing will decrease. Current social distancing is less than the recommended six feet, the new schedule would require that number to dropas low as 3 feet. This is particular concerning because COVID 19 cases and hospitalizations due to COVID 19 are higher than ever in Missouri. This Friday, November 12, 2020, St. Louis County Executive, Dr. Sam Page, has plans to put new restrictions in place. While he doesn’t plan to put new restrictions on schools, the necessity for new restrictions should be a cause for concern. The mayor of the city of St. Louis has also made similar comments and spoken about working with the county. According to an article from KMOV4 St. Louis, many schools and school districts are scaling back reopening plans in light of increased cases and hospitalizations as well as looming restrictions. Additionally, in November, Mizzou announced that it would be canceling in person classes after Thanksgiving break. In the student run newspaper, The Prep News, there was a commentary as well as a poll that showed that not everyone is okay with SLUH’s plans. This petition was created to ask the school’s administration to reconsider their plans. The HyFlex model has worked well, why change it?
