Due to budget cuts, the ASL teaching position at La Jolla High School has been cut down to 3 class periods. Because of this, our current teacher, Janelle Gans, will no longer work at La Jolla. However, if we were to increase enrollment in classes, even at the beginner level, and show support for the class through re-enrollment, the district will have to provide an adequate teacher. By signing this petition you show your support not only for the language, but for the teachers who bring this level of education to our schools. With smaller budgets and many cuts being made, it is important to show support for what we believe is right.

Updates

March 13, 2018

I am currently coordinating with department heads to discuss how student enrollment impacts the future of our ASL program. Please email your school board representative today to demand that they prioritize language access and protect our current teaching staff.

The momentum behind this petition is undeniable and shows the district exactly how much our community values these classes. Take this energy a step further by emailing your school board representative today to demand a full teaching position for our ASL program.

Ms. Gans was my teacher for 4 years at La Jolla High. Her instruction provided me with a firm background in American Sign Language and Deaf Culture, which has given me a significant advantage over my classmates at CSU Northridge where I am pursuing a degree in Deaf Studies. Reducing the size of the ASL department means losing one of the most effective and knowledgeable ASL teachers in the district.

Why deny our children the opportunity to communicate with over 10 million people in the US who are deaf or hard of hearing?

Mar 13, 2018 Asl was the best class I took at LJHS. That being said, the pure joy a deaf person has when we who’ve taken this class can speak to them in their language, INCREDIBLE. It’s crazy how by having a 5 minute conversation with a deaf person as a hearing person makes their whole day! It’s a simple thing for us all to learn, it means the world to a deaf person. 10/10 recommend keeping this class and ms. Gans she’s the absolute best.

I am now a 4th year college student who is on their last semester of an ASL interpeting program. I will be recieving my interpeting degree this spring. I started learning ASL at La Jolla High, and would not be where I am today if it were not for that class. It is what inspired me to continue on. LJHS, you are preventing future students from learning another language, culture, and possible career path. Shame on you!!!

Ms. Gans is an excellent teacher and has taught my daughter so much. I would love for future students to have this option - it's a useful alternative to Spanish and other foreign languages. Please reconsider retaining this skilled teacher and class!

LJHS needs to find the way to keep this program. The Spanish program at this school taught my son nada after three years. Meanwhile, my daughter in 1st year ASL is learning a lot and excited about it too.
