The Kane County Water Conservancy District is proposing to build a luxury golf course at public expense. I am deeply concerned about the serious risk this project may pose to our finances and our limited water supply.

As it is planned, millions of dollars of public revenue would be used to build the golf course. Investors in housing developments, hotels, and other amenities will make money from this golf course without having to repay the money contributed by our taxes and water fees.

The sport of golf is declining in the United States. Between 2002 and 2016 the number of regular golfers dropped from 30 to 20.9 million. Most millennials do not want to play golf. As a result, thousands of golf courses have gone bankrupt or closed.

In 2015 the Kanab Coral Cliffs Golf Course closed because it was bringing in only half the money needed to operate it. If the current proposed new golf resort does not earn enough money to cover its own expenses, then Kane County residents may be paying higher taxes and water fees to support this ongoing loss.

We are experiencing the most severe and prolonged drought in our lifetimes. This golf course would be using large amounts of water that may be needed to provide necessary security for our ranchers, families, and businesses.

PETITION TO KANE COUNTY LEADERS

I petition the Kane County Water Conservancy District, the Kane County Commissioners, the Kanab Mayor and City Council, and the Kanab Irrigation Company to consider and honor the following requests:

I am a resident or own property in Kane County, Utah.

I do not want our public money to be spent on a luxury golf resort.

I want our local officials to avoid the risk of higher taxes and water rates associated with this project.

I want our public money to be spent on necessary services and infrastructure that directly benefits our community rather than benefitting a small group of wealthy investors and golfers from outside our area.

Because we are experiencing the worst drought in our lifetimes we should not waste water on a golf course.

I want all spending on this proposed golf course resort to immediately stop.

I oppose the development of the destination Golf course that is currently being proposed by the KCWCD, for all the reasons indicated in the petition I have signed. I believe there is a steady decline in golf as a sport that is likely to continue and accelerate. I fear for our already drought stricken local environment, and feel that the proposed golf course would needlessly risk our local water supply. I also believe that the KCWCD district has stepped beyond its main objective in promoting this plan, involving Kane County and the city of Kanab in a costly and risky endeavor that benefits few, and is likely to fail.

I agree with the previously stated reasoning. In addition, I am opposed to building of this golf course because it will monetarily benefit a few people locally-real estate owners, consultants. and developers- at the great expense of our larger community. Public money should not be used for the private enrichment of a few.

I have yet to see an economic analysis by a disinterested third party. I emailed the county asking for that analysis and received no reply

This is a poor use of our finite and unmapped water resource, especially in the current state of drought

Please stop with this ridiculous idea of building a golf course at tax payer expense!
