In January 2017 Joe Montgomery was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He punched a man once on a train. He did not use a weapon.
Joe was on his way to work one morning on a train from East Croydon train station when a man was verbally abusing him. Joe went to move down the carriage when the man followed him and was threatening Joe. It appeared that the man was going to attack Joe so Joe punched the man once and knocked the man out. Damage was caused to the man but he did fully recover.
Joe was sentenced to 10 years in Prison for this offence and even the prison officers have said that was very harsh.
On 24th February 2017 a man was convicted of manslaughter for a one punch crime and in this case his victim died as a result of the punch. The sentence he was given was six years.
It would have been better if Joe has killed the man so that he would have got a lesser sentence.
Where is the consistency in the legal system and sentencing.

All Joe wants is a lesser sentence to reflect the crime he committed.

Joe is a lovely chap with a young family who need him . He had just heard that his mother whom he adored had terminal cancer so was not himself when this happened
Doing the right thing in the first place and walking away is exactly what Joe did. When you feel threatened and have to defend yourself then why should the outcome be any different?! Absolute disgrace, justice for Joe!
This is not fair at all. I saw a woman cry her eyes out on live television because her son was killed in black health by one punch and the man received just 6 years in prison. It's extremely unfair.
Shocking that Joe got 10 years for protecting himself. So should we just let others beat us? As it seems, if I was to defend myself I would end up doing time (10 years)
Joe does not deserve such a big sentence for a single punch to a man that he believes was going to attack him (self defence ) He is a family man and a hard worker I've known Joe since the age of 9 He has always stuck up for himself but I've never seen him start trouble
Truly the wrong decision unjust This man has a family to look after I think he has served enough time already for his actions and should be released
In my eyes no real crime was comited unfair decision justice was not served the sentence was disgraceful people get less sentence for rape
