"A body-building boxer who killed a staff sergeant and knocked out his wife in a cocaine-fuelled street attack has been jailed for five years."
He will only serve 2.5 years.
The couple were enjoying a rare night off together after Staff Chacksfield had returned the previous month from Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. Ssgt Chacksfield was on exercise in the North East and was allowed a night off to spend time with his wife.
A number of witnesses saw Ridley's unprovoked attack in Newgate Street, with some saying one punch knocked out the couple, others saying two. All agreed the punch was thrown without warning and for no reason. Judge Faulks said Ridley had bumped into the 31-year-old soldier before striking out.
This is not the sentence that the people of the UK expect to be dealt out by the courts of our land. I call for the sentence to be increased to ten years minimum.

I have been reading through your messages and the grief you express confirms what I already know about the pain caused by this insultingly short sentence. I am working behind the scenes to prepare a formal submission to the Ministry of Justice because a soldier who survived a war zone deserves better protection than this. We will keep pushing until the authorities acknowledge that two years is not justice.

Seeing this level of support reminds me that we are not alone in feeling the deep injustice of this outcome for the Chacksfield family. Your commitment to this cause proves that the public has not forgotten the soldier who served his country only to be taken down in such a senseless way.

Five years is an absolute joke. This man served his country and lost his life to a coward. Needs to be a much longer sentence.

Ridiculous sentence. He was just minding his own business! Give him the 10 years he deserves.
