Jax Gratton was incredible woman. She started everyday with the world against her as a trans woman and yet always chose to lift up others, to advocate for a better world, and to give to those in need. Jax disappeared in April of 2025 and was found dead in June of 2025.

The family, friends, and community of Jax Gratton experienced an unspeakable loss with her death. To add insult to injury, they have had to fight in times that no person should have to. First to find Jax. Then to bring Jax home. And now to ensure that Jax is not swept under the rug.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office forced family and friends to wait weeks to receive the body, argued with the family, misrepresented information, and called the incorrect point of contact for Jax on two separate occasions. They referred to Jax’s body as an object requiring storage rather than a beloved community member deserving care in her final journey.

The Lakewood Police have been lackluster in their investigation, often falling to biased narratives about transgender women. The Lakewood Police deadnamed Jax in their press release when she was found. Jax’s mother has had to fight and advocate when she should be grieving in order to have her daughter’s case taken seriously.

Transgender women are often likely to have their deaths swept aside because our institutions do not value them. We will not let that happen for Jax, for our community, and for trans people everywhere.

In order to ensure that Jax’s life is valued as much as anyone else in our community, we call for the Jefferson County Commissioners and Lakewood City Council to create a joining oversight task-force to monitor the progress of the investigation to ensure that it is trans competent, trauma informed, transparent, and thorough.

We call that the Task Force include (at minimum):

  • A trans community member
  • A trans advocate
  • An individual with experience in advocacy for 2SLGBTQIA+ victims
  • A representative from the legal community
