Final supporters
We, the citizens of the town of Junction City, petition the City and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to construct a Multi-Use Trail along 8th Street (K-18) between Rucker Rd. and Spring Valley Rd.
There is currently no safe trail on the 8th Street corridor between Rucker Rd. and Spring Valley Rd. The existing terrain has rock outcroppings and steep embankments that cause citizens to walk or bike in the roadway. Citizens also must walk in the roadway on the overpass bridge spanning US 77. With the Middle School on the west side of US 77 and the High School on the east side of US 77, there are many children at risk walking or biking along this corridor. Besides access to and from school, this route is utilized for cross country training and provides access to Helland Park where science teachers are educating their classes. It is a vital connection for the community, joining the east and west areas of Junction City split by US 77.
With KDOT's proposed improvements of the K-18 (8th Street) & Spring Valley Rd. Intersection and the K-18 (8th Street) & US 77 Interchange, now is the time to include a multi-use trail for pedestrians and cyclists to safely travel 8th Street.

I spent the morning staring at the overpass near the high school and it just hits me harder every time I think about the cross country team trying to dodge traffic while the road is still so uneven. People are reaching out to tell me about their own close calls near that bridge and honestly the stories are starting to pile up in my inbox which just proves we absolutely have to get someone at the city office to look at these maps with us.

Science teacher-hiker, bike enthusiast, I would like to take my Biology students for more field experiences, a trail here would allow students to safely access outdoor areas for outdoor lab experiments. Please consider funding this trail. Even more important, this walkway is unsafe for students who must walk to school because they live too close to ride the bus.
I personally have come head-on with a vehicle in on-coming traffic that was in my lane due to a walking pedestrian on the side of the road on this stretch of that street.
Having kids that go to the Middle School and High School this would be an excellent way to provide a safe passage for the kids. I also like to bike ride during the summer and riding on this road is really risky. You are at the mercy of the traffice and hopping that they see you when you ride. This path also will give runners a way to get the the gym(Country Club) that is located on this road. My husband and I run on this road to and from the gym on occations and would rather run through the golf course back home due to the hazards of running on the road.
This would be a great improvement. Junction City constantly grows and expands yet overlooks improvement that need to go along with the expantion. We were given a larger Midle School to accomodate the growing population but not everyone can or does ride a bus. For those children who may have to walk to or from school, this stretch is very dangerous. Having a trail in that area would be great for students and wonderful for the whole community to use.
Should have been done a long time ago. Students miss their buses all the time and have to walk this dangerous road to the middle school.

This is really needed for the safety of our kids and as a first start to a city trail system
