Please accept this letter in support of the re-hiring of Jim Alexander as the Head Pro at the H. Smith Richardson Golf Course. While this is not intended to be an endorsement by the Men’s, Woman’s or Senior golf associations, many of the undersigned are in fact members of one or more of these groups and witness the professionalism and commitment that Jim devotes to his position on a regular basis. In recent years, Smith has earned the reputation of being one of, if not the premier public golf course not only in Connecticut, but in the entire tri-state area. This is in no small part due to the direct influence that Jim has had on the golf course and the entire facility.

Included but not limited to improvements he has made in areas such as pace of play, computerizing starting times, course enhancement, staff supervision and responsibility, Jim keeps up with the daily tasks of running the course including the ticket window, the driving range and the cart barn with the utmost proficiency. It should be noted that under Jim’s supervision, the enhancement of the golf teaching program at Smith, including individual and group lessons from the beginner to the most advanced golfer, has also improved. Many of us have enrolled family members in Smith’s Jr. golf program, entrusting Jim and his staff with full confidence that they will develop not only in golf, but many other areas as well.

During these unprecedented times of Covid concerns and restrictions, Jim has adhered to all the CDC, state and town mandates and continues to maintain a safe and comfortable environment across the entire the facility. He has also and incorporated many of his own safeguards to further ensure public safety.

Jim also does an excellent job coordinating golf activities and site logistics during the current renovation of the clubhouse. Golf operations have not missed a beat during construction. Jim has been very instrumental in providing his golf expertise to the building committee. Much of the design of the new clubhouse and pro shop have been a product of Jim’s recommendations.

Jim assists the woman’s, men’s and Sr. golf associations, consistently offering his support and help in a variety of capacities, much of which go unnoticed. Including everything from the setting up and running of tournaments to posting scores and giving various suggestions, rules interpretations and then some, Jim is always ready to donate his time and effort. Through Alexander’s Pro Shop, Jim’s financial record keeping for all association members, his top line equipment offerings and competitive pricing, he provides a general sense of ease for everyone.

In closing we applaud all that Jim has done in the past and are fully confident that he will offer a seamless transition into the new clubhouse all while continuing to enhance the H. Smith Richardson golf course and keep it moving in the right direction.
