Final supporters
For decades, seniors at Quincy High School have enjoyed a tradition that allows them to leave their mark, both figuratively and literally. During homecoming week the seniors take to the nearby street to paint their name, celebrating their last year in their public school. It's a tradition students look forward to from a young age.
A few years ago the citizens of Quincy voted to have their taxes increased in support of the students in their area. The opportunity was taken at that time to do away with this tradition.
We are so grateful for our impressive new high school. However, we do not believe forgoing decades old tradition is what the community wants nor is it something that should have been a part of the contract for a new school.
We petition those responsible to allow Quincy High School seniors the right to carry on the tradition of spray painting their names on Jackrabbit Street.

Seeing two hundred and fifty signatures for our tradition feels incredible because I know how much those painted names meant to my own siblings during their senior year. It is clear that this community still values the history we built on Jackrabbit Street despite the recent changes. Thank you for helping me show the administration that this matters to all of us.

Seeing the count climb toward 250 reminds me of the names my own siblings painted on that pavement years ago. We need to keep this momentum going so we can show the administration that our history is not up for negotiation.

Homecoming King 1999 This is one of the greatest traditions in Quincy High history, and a highlight of homecoming week. This was always one of the things that made our school stand out from others, and students from other towns were envious of it. This is what being a Jackrabbit is about.
I remember painting my name on the roadway like it was yesterday. It was Halloween 1987, rather than wearing the traditional green and gold, we were dressed as vampires, witches, punks, clowns, and the like. I still enjoy driving past the spray painted names each year.
We need to keep our traditions alive, it’s what helps make this community and was born and raised here growing up that was the highlight of finishing school and now with kids of my own and one in high school he’s looking forward to doing all the traditions that myself and his aunts and uncles have done.
As an alumni of this school, I can’t say enough how sad it would be to take this away. We looked forward to that day for years. Probably a better bonding experience as a class than anything you can replace it with. And it absolutely does zero harm, and doesn’t cost the school a penny.
I agree expect for the chalk compromise. One of best things about the tradition is that your name is there for months. It's a matter of pride for family and friends to drive past and find their seniors name. That's just not doable with chalk.

A few years ago the citizens of Quincy voted to have their taxes increased in support of the students in their area. The opportunity was taken at that time to do away with this tradition.
We are so grateful for our impressive new high school. However, we do not believe forgoing decades old tradition is what the community wants nor is it something that should have been a part of the contract for a new school.
We petition those responsible to allow Quincy High School seniors the right to carry on the tradition of spray painting their names on Jackrabbit Street.

Painting the “walk” is a tradition that goes beyond spray paint. These seniors get a chance to make a mark on this town as a last goodbye. Some may stay or come back to make other marks but for many this is their last chance of saying I was here! Don’t take that away from them!
