Urgent Call for an Indoor Swimming Facility in Walvis Bay
Dear Walvis Bay Municipality and Local Industry Leaders,
We are writing on behalf of concerned residents and businesses of Walvis Bay to address a pressing need in our community – the establishment of a proper indoor swimming facility. As a coastal and harbour town, it is imperative that our children, workforce, and residents have access to safe and accessible swimming facilities to ensure their safety and well-being.
Swimming is not just a sport; it is a vital life skill, especially in our seaside community. Despite our proximity to the ocean, lagoon, dams and rivers, the lack of a suitable indoor swimming pool places our children and residents at risk. The harsh weather conditions and challenges of outdoor swimming facilities necessitate an indoor alternative that is both reliable and safe throughout the year.
Our neighboring towns, including Swakopmund, the capital, Windhoek, and even Mariental, have recognised the importance of such facilities and have invested in their communities' future. We are lagging behind, especially as we witnessed the recent closure of our only reasonable pool, which was already insufficient at just 15 meters. The demand for swim schools in our town is evident, with waiting lists growing and an eager community ready to participate.
In light of regular and recent drowning incidents and the ongoing neglect of existing facilities, we urge the Walvis Bay Municipality to prioritise the development of a 25-meter indoor swimming pool, including a training pool. This facility should serve both the public and multiple swim schools to foster a culture of safety and excellence in swimming.
Should the municipality be unable to undertake this project, we are prepared to explore alternative solutions, including crowdfunding, to pursue the realisation of this long outstanding vision. We invite all interested parties to join us in this endeavour. Please express your interest by emailing itstime4apoolwalvis @ gmail.com, and together, we can create a lasting positive impact on our town's safety and development.
Thank you for your attention and consideration. We look forward to your support and collaboration in making Walvis Bay a safer and more prosperous community for all its residents.
Sincerely,
The Residents of Walvis Bay

Swimming is a vital and important and lifesaving skill that every human being needs to be acquired. However such a skill needs to be taught by swimming coaches in a safe environments and in temperature regulated circumstances to provide a space that creates a positive experience. Ideally swimming needs to be taught from earliest childhood and regularly. This safe, well structured and positive experience can only be achieved with an indoor facility.
Yes please a indoor swimming pool would be very nice. It may provide the opportunity that my children can learn to swim that is more affordable.
Although we have an outdoor municipal pool it is always cold and needs constant maintenance due to wind. Kids are drowning all the time in the ocean and if they had this skill surely the numbers would go down.
We really have grown in population in wbay, we have only rehabilitated outdated outdoor swimming pool for a town that makes lots of money.. we can’t enjoy nice swimming bcos of rapidly changing weather mixed with nonstop wind, pls we our little once need a indoor swimming pool.. we have struggled too long with this..
This was overdue matter of concern, so sad big town like Walvis bay with lots of sea going seamen’s with out throughout the year pool, that includes for exercise purposes. This matter is to be considered. Thanks
We need this as we are literally living next t the ocean where we are chilling t the beach. Our children deserves to know how to swim, or safety it's unbelievable that we have sign a petition for this necessity to begin with
A big swimming pool for the future generations

I started this project some 3o years ago. Plans have been approved but unfortunately the money for that project has been allocated to another project and since then no further effort was made to get this project off the ground. I am still of the oppinion that watersafety is a lifeskill every single person needs
