We urge the board members of Lake County & Lake County Forest Preserve District to approve the transfer of 4.7 acres of forest preserve property adjacent the Fort Sheridan National Cemetery to the Veterans Administration. If approved the VA has agreed to relieve the district from maintaining the cemetery. The additional land will extend the use of the cemetery for 50 years. We believe that the Fort Sheridan Cemetery is the proper place of honor for our nations defenders and provide comfort for their families. All the chartered Veteran organizations support this project.

I worked at Fort Sheridan for almost 30 years as an Active duty officer, a Reservist and a Department of the Army Civilian. I am eligible for burial there, but there may be no room for me.
I would rather see some of the land formerly occupied by Ft. Sheridan dedicated to resting places for our military veterans than housing complexes for the well to do.
As a retired Army Reserve Sergeant First Class who served at Fort Sheridan from 2006-2019 it would serve the families of deceased U.S. military veterans to be buried alongside their brothers and sisters in Arms to visit. I believe the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is the right agency to oversee the Fort Sheridan Cemetary.
As the past commander for VFW Post 3873 I fully support the acquisition of the property. On a personal note several comrades I served with a buried there along with a monument to their sacrifice. I strongly support this endeavor.
As a veteran, age 84, I am now thinking about where I can be buried close to my family, and I would really appreciate the opportunity to be interned at the Fort Sheridan cemetery because of the location and convenience for my family when my time comes.
We need to find spaces for our veterans to rest in peace.

I would think that the board would honor the fallen heroes by giving the family the ease of visiting them regularly instead of having to drive to Joliet for 2 hours.
