As a community, we are signing this petition with the intent to raise awareness and implement traffic calming and safety tools through direct action. This includes concerned friends and citizens of Boulder Creek and residents of the neighborhoods within and surrounding Highway 236 at the West and East Hilton crossroads, Kings Hwy, China Basin, and Lower / Upper Big Basin.
We are all impacted by any tragic event that involves a community member. Continuously reminding us of the frailty of life when a driver is speeding dangerously close to our neighbors who are biking, walking along or crossing the highway, and especially our children at school bus stops.
With no regard for safety there have been too many near misses, due to the many local drivers and visitors zooming by in excess of posted speed limits. Drivers are passing others by crossing the double yellow lines. Too often, folks are swerving into the white line putting our kids at school bus stops at risk or blatantly passing our school buses when the red lights are flashing and stop sign is activated. Blind spots including overgrown trees and shrubs surrounding the golf course on Hwy 236 can put the safest driver in jeopardy. There are numerous measures that can be taken to avoid accident and injury.
We urge the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (SCCRTC) to respond with a statement making the “Highway 236 Safety for Pedestrians and School Bus Stops” project a top priority and informing our community when work will start on the solution. The plan is to piggyback on Measure D funding currently allocated towards SLV traffic calming and safety tools for pedestrians. We also ask that the SCCRTC, CalTrans, and MADD dedicate this corridor as a "safe route" in memory of Marsha Nord.

I have been reading through all your stories about the dangers near the bus stops and crossroads. It is truly humbling to see that so many of you share this worry for our neighborhood safety. Please know that I am working to get these concerns in front of the right local officials.

Seeing the momentum behind this request is truly overwhelming and entirely unexpected. This has become so much bigger than I ever imagined because you all decided this issue needs attention. I am just humbled that so many of you care this deeply about keeping our neighbors safe on the road.

The number of speeding cars every day is really dangerous. This is an area with many users -- kids crossing to and from their bus stops, people going to the golf club, neighbors walking their pets, cyclists...If anybody from your office could spend just a few hours here, you'd see what we're talking about. Another tragedy is just around the corner unless there are some measures put in place. And this may be dreaming but a dedicated lane or sidewalk to cycle into town would be fantastic. But, first, let's make sure nobody else dies unnecessarily on this stretch of road.
it would be nice to see a sidewalk and bike lane all the way to town. A 4 way stop at west and east Hilton would slow people down. One reason I think people drive so fast at this part of the road is because it is one of only a few straight aways
I work in the Pro Shop at the golf course 5 days a week. I live on Kings Hwy. I witness cars speeding through the 236/Kings Hwy & 236/Hilton intersections daily with several close calls regularly. We have a large community of pedestrians from dog walkers to people walking for exercise or simply visiting their neighbors in addition to the local vehicular traffic entering or leaving Kings Hwy & Hilton Drive/Hwy 236 and golfers crossing the highway in two locations. Add in the bicycle traffic and tourism in the summer. Marsha was a friend of mine. No matter what is done with signage, lower speed limits etc., speeders will continue to make 236 unsafe unless our CHP and Sheriff's Dept. do some ongoing and agressive enforcement to deter speeding on Hwy 236. This ain't the wild West anymore.
Marsha was my Sister in Law . Since the tragedy that took her life I have witnessed countless infractions of carelessness with disregard of speeding cars. It scares me just to try to enter 236 from Kings Highway . The County needs to facilitate the safety of the community .
With 3 pedestrian fatalities in the past year, it is long overdue to make pedestrian safety a priority!
I am very concerned about the risks and hazards on our roadways. Awareness is needed and action is imperative before more lives are lost. Thank you.

I walk on 236 and ride the Metro I do not feel safe walking with my sons on 236.
