In the Apokoronas district of West Crete there is a big problem with stray cats and dogs. The council has bravely led on helping these strays but the lack of suitable premises and the increasing number of abandoned animals is affecting the current program and could possibly threaten completely future efforts.

The municipality was the first in Western Crete to develop a program to help strays, in partnership with charities and local vetinarians, for which we are grateful. But we also recognise that in the current difficult times the council have a great number of issues to deal with and we hope that a well supported petition will persuade them to keep this as one of areas they will continue to address.

If you visit Crete, and especially if you live here, we are asking for your support.

We thank the Mayor and the council for their efforts to date. Now residents plus the many regular visitors to our municipality urge them to take the necessary actions towards establishing suitable premises so that they can continue the neutering program that has been so successful. This will help our stray cats and dogs and make our district an even better place to live or holiday in.

I was just checking the counter and seeing the names climb toward that first hundred keeps me up at night honestly because the cats and the dogs in Apokoronas really need this facility to exist. Could you just find one person who loves Crete as much as we do and send them the link right now while I try to figure out how to get the local papers to actually pay attention to what we are doing.

Please continue free neutering. When I have holidayed in Crete in the past the amount of stray cats is unbelievable. Neutering is the best way to prevent unwanted animals who have no control over their lives. Its not fair.

Frustrated with the whole situation here - we have taken in two dogs and paid for castrations and be unable to find home for them - now have 3 dogs ... with the added expenses for vaccines etc ... we have very limited resources and without a neutering programme continuing here the situation will never improve the life of animals.

we have spent 13 years rescuing animals on crete. It is a full time job... only forced to stop because of my husbands head injury. But it is unfair to expect individuals to the job that the local authorities should do by law....

We rescued a stray dog four years ago and are currently fostering a puppy. We urge the authorities to continue to help alleviate the problem of stray cats and dogs as many people cannot take any more animals themselves.

I hate seeing the cats with brown noses waiting for food at the bins and to go through all the rubbish. But it is the dogs running around with no hope of finding food or water really that make me feel so bad about living here.

We have paid for quite a few cats to be neutered - we have around 10 who come daily for food. They are all neutered other than one girl - now pregnant but very difficult to catch! No - a cat trap will likely trap one of her brothers - all neutered now.
