Illegal Dirt Bikes and ATVs have plagued the City for many years, and attempts to solve the problem have met with little success. The New Haven Police Department has drafted legislation to make it easier to combat the problem. The new legislation would subject the riders to civil penalties and make it easier to seize bikes. The new legislation, modeled after an ordinance in New London, would switch the focus from criminal to civil and do the following:
1. Fine the drivers $1,000 with 100% of proceeds going to the City of New Haven
2. Allow the City to confiscate the bikes/ATVs and sell the bikes at auction with proceeds going to City of New Haven. Prior legislation required a criminal conviction at the State level.
3. Prohibit gas stations from selling gas for use in dirt-bikes, and fining $100 any gas station that does so.
4. Require gas stations to post notices FUELING OF UNAUTHORIZED VEHICLES PROHIBITED.
The legislation is being reviewed by the City's Corporation Counsel. By signing this petition you are asking the City and the Board of Alders to pass the legislation.

As a New Haven resident, I have seen firsthand the nuisance and safety hazard these riders present. Increasing the fine is a good step toward making our neighborhoods and roadways safer.
They are loud noisy not safe on roads streets and I’m very concerned they will hit something like a person or a chapel haven student walking on the street get them off so we can feel safe again
Almost got hit head on on whalley ave about a month ago. When I was a kid i got in trouble riding my minibike on the street. Respecting all laws. So if these people don't need to register their motor vehicles,why should we?
It is time to stop the dirt bikes that roam through parks when children and families are trying to enjoy it. Driving in packs down streets is not fair to we who live in New Haven pay taxes and try to be good citizens
I particularly like article 3. However, unless neighboring towns adopt the same legislation, there will be nothing to prevent dirt bikes from being refueled in West Haven, East Haven, etc. Nevertheless, this law is a start!
I was hit by one riding on the sidewalk trying to pass me turning into my driveway yesterday. Hagerstown police didn’t even come out to talk to me or even look at the damage. Might be stuck paying thousands of dollars to fix my car because nothing is being done about This. I also got injured hit my head off the window had to go to the er have whiplash as well
They are a menace, trigger fear and anger wherever they go.

Would be nice to not have to deal with the loudness of the illegal dirt bikes. The disturbance it not only causes to residents but business is a negative look to the city of New Haven.
