WE ACTUALLY DID IT AND CAMP STRAKE IS FINALLY SAVED!! THE DEVELOPERS HAVE OFFICIALLY BACKED OFF AND OUR BEAUTIFUL NATURE PRESERVE IS SECURED FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!! STAY VIGILANT BECAUSE WE MUST ENSURE THIS LAND STAYS PROTECTED FOREVER!!

In keeping with the wishes of the philanthropist George Strake, who donated Camp
Strake to the Boy Scouts over 70 years ago, and never donated anything for people or groups to profit from. Camp Strake and it's 2,100 acres of abundant wildlife, wetlands, and natural lakes, should be designated a Nature Preserve. It's unfathomable that the Mayor and City Council of Conroe, TX voted to issue variances, so that Camp Strake can be bought out of the 100 year flood plain, by filling in the wetlands and natural lakes. Are you concerned at all with Endangered Species that have been spotted in and around the camp? Haven't you destroyed enough pristine property in multiple states in your 30 year career? Why don't you give something back to this community? Rename the park George Strake Memorial Park or Larry D. Johnson Nature Preserve. This would be a fabulous vision for the future of our community. Try to imagine Houston without Memorial Park. If it's possible for you to leave the Camp standing and you have the means to, Camp Strake will be the only natural oasis left standing, in a sea of concrete, steel and asphalt. Have you conducted an environmental impact study, or a presence/absence survey? We don't need another shopping mall, there is already a great big one down the street and the Hughes Development has made sure there is surplus of high end homes. The wildlife in the area are running out of habitat. Thousands of trees have been cut down. Please, reconsider destroying this unique property. Give something back to nature, and be a good steward of the earth.

Sad to see the greed of the City of Conroe. This property is part of a natural ecosystem of wetlands that really should be preserved. All of that area is being developed so you and I can pay higher insurance premiums when this area floods again. It's not if but when!
We have enough commercial and residential development in this area. This land should be maintained as Mr Strake intended. Turn this land into a govt protected wetlands for educational/species protected park. Local residents need another area to enjoy nature. This is simply greed and needs to be stopped.
My family have of memories at Camp Strake from Cub Scouts to 3 Eagle Scouts. One Son that work at the camp for 3 years. Please keep it so that we can go back and remember so many of our wonderful memories.
there is said to be paleo (over 8000 yrs old) Indian artifacts in and around that entire area which shows the history of the area let alone all the wildlife that are being pushed out of their natural habitats. Please save some of the last remaining wilderness areas in Conroe and leave nature to run its course.
There is no reason to develop this area. With Houston expanding daily and thousands of trees and acres consumed by humans each year, preserving green spaces such as Camp Strake is of vital importance to the environment. Revitalize the Conroe Outlet mall, don't take away something we can never bring back.
Any area that used to be set aside for the Boy Scouts to get a piece of nature near Houston should not be developed into another neighborhood. We have enough of those and many other areas that can become neighborhoods. Save a piece of what used to be for future generations to enjoy!!!
I grew up in Conroe. My brother camped as a Boy Scout at Camp Strake in the 70's.. It will be very sad if greedy developers are allowed to destroy what God created & man preserved all these years.

This precious, serene area that is a habitat for many of God's precious creatures, including endangered ones, is going to be destroyed for further development of the concrete jungle. Pray that man decides to do what is right.
